What a day :)

Went to Philip Island yesterday, had a few beers and watched the bike racing.
We sat on the hill on turn 1, me with my Feroza (Philip Islan Recovery Vehicle) and my mate with his Rodeo Dual Cab. And well it was boggy to say the least... atleast 8 cars go bogged on the fairly level patches, which was very amusing.. We just kicked back and watched the entertainment from all angles..
1 idiot and his misses with a barina, trying to get out in reverse, and putting planks in the front of the tyres, then trying forwards and putting planks are the rear of the tyres.. great entertainment value.
Well in the end we towed an EA (I think) wagon and a VX SS ute out with the Roza.. I was soo impressed as to how easy it was.. Heard a few comments from people who couldn't belieive what they were seeing. So yeah def a fun day
Hopefully my mate has a few photo's.
Just curious are there any things I should be aware of when salvaging vehicles? Just abit wary of doing any damage to my own vehicle obviously.

There is a lot to know... check out this article, mainly be aware of your snatch points and ne aware that if the snatch breaks... dont be anywhere near it.
Its mainly about winching but gives good info on hardware, there is snatching info at the lower part of the page...

I doubt a snatch strap was being used (or at least I hope not!?) seeing that EA Falcons and Commodore utes don't have proper recovery points....

Its interesting that a lot of people, both on this board, and on real time 4wd trips, always want to use a snatch strap as such. Many times I have seen a recovery situation where a snatch was not necessary. This mainly refers to where traction has been lost, mainly in mud. A simple snig, or gentle tow, using a snatch strap, may be all that is necessary. In this case, given that most 2wd's, Falcons and Commodores ect, dont have rated recovery points, these points are probably suitable, using care. I am NOT saying it is safe to use one of these points for a full blown snatch recovery, but that they are probably ok to use in a simple dead pull tow where all that has happened is that traction has been lost.
In any recovery situation that I am in, where a snatch strap is going to be used, I always attempt a gentle straight pull first. If this doesnt work, then a gentle snatch, before increasing the effort each time until the recovery is made. Obviously, this is only done where the overall safety of the recovery isnt jepodised.

Problem is the towing point on the other vehicle would be the first to break- meaning the Feroza would wear the strap complete with whatever bits it managed to pull off the other vehicle!

Right on Bundy...
But I always use the snatch because I know its in good nick and I know where mine has been and its always in the car. I dont like using rope or chain cos I dont have them and dont always trust other's stuff (unless I know them).
I also often find that a gentle pull is enough just to get pressure on and traction to the ground, failing that... we get a run-up!!

Perzackly...
With the EA, wi just put each and of the strap over the tow bar. and it just slowly took up the tension and pulled it out.
The VS was another story, he didn't have his tow bar in place, so the owner (Notice we let the owner do it) fed the end of the snatch down the square tuping and then fed the snatch through the eye and pulled it through, then hooked it onto my tow bar. Then pulled it out.. It took a few goes to get it out, due to it being in abit of an incline. But it came out easy once my car was taking the right line forward, reducing the load and giving me traction.
And he was very gratefull.. But again not my problem is his car f'd up, he shouldn't have put a shiny new SS ute into the bog... along with the 8 other cars.. 3 or 4 of which were stuck before he came along..
I was just interested to find out if there were any issues with towing, etc because of the other vehicles being heavier, but she didn't seem to have any problems with the load, so I'm guessing all was ok... I had a ball though..

yes but it wasn't a track, it was a hill at a race track..
We wanted to leave just enough of a mark, that we could see where we were, come the MotoGP in 4 weeks time.. :-)
