Howdy folks, trying to find out if this combo is possible 22R & 5 speed box info an F20 ? I need another gear and to get the old pig onto ULP.
Or should I perhaps go the 3Y ?

Gee, same thing I'm wondering for a year....

seems the perfect combination for a lightweight F20, gives you back some grunt with larger tires..

It seems that all R-series engines can be swapped, that implies that they have the same bolt pattern to the tranny. I haven't been able to check it myself. Otherways you have to make your custom bellhousing or adaptor plate.

people have slotted 18r's in F20s mith minor mod's an fabricating, I think it isn't that complicated. I've got an 12r in the workshop, if you got a bolt pattern of a 22r, I can check if they match.'

Thanks for response :)

I dont have any motor yet 'cept the 18R thats in it... I need to know what will fit before I pick one up. I will grab a complete Corolla as soon as I know what one :) cheap as chips usually...

Cheers.

Hey TX, depending on where you are you might need to check first with the rta or similar in your state as to what is allowed. In qld you can only upgrade to a 2.0L motor, so that means an 18R. I did a full 18R conversion on my F20, was an easy conversion with the right gear. A bell housing extension from Dellows in sydney and some bolt on engine mounts, no need the change the engine mounts on the chassis, the rest was straighforward. Dellows might not make them anymore though, a phone call wil find this out. The bellhousing ext bolted straigh up to my 4 speed, then the 5 speed when I swapped it. Gearbox and transfer remain in the same spot, so no mounting mods needed or different driveshafts.

Any questions just ask, will try to help you out as much as possible, I know what its like trying to get help on these little rigs, there just isnt much tech out there.

Ahh very good.. 12R is what I meant.. it has the original 12R in it.. so for a 5 speed I need an adaptor? ... but I could plonk a 22R straight in on the orig 4 speed ? sounds good.. we have pretty lax transport regs in Tas. as long as its a 4cyl and it fitted without chewing gum and hotmelt glue it should be fine, and as long as the motor serial number is put on the rego details.

I'm looking @ http://www.dellowauto.com.au/ now their catalog is here http://www.dellowauto.com.au/catalogue/ ... motive.pdf

Looks like they have a 12R to Hilux adaptor..
will send em an email :)

Cheers.

Hey Area54, like I said, I'm also planning a 18r/22r swap. Over here in Europe it seems even harder to find (aftermarket) stuf for these cars than in Oz, so I think that will be som sleepless nights in the workshop, fabricating my own bell-kit and mounts. Do you have some pics of de dellows kit? Hope you can help me out on this since I can't do the measurements myself. 22r an 18r engines are very expensive over here so before I gonna purchase one, I'd like to be sure I'm gonna pull this together in the end.

BTW. saw you sported 32's. How's the ride in combination with the 18R?

Thanks

Ron

The five speed will bolt straight in (I sourced a 5 speed from a later model F20 with 12R) to your 12R. You will need a bell housing adaptor and engine mount adaptor to fit an 18R/22R.

I first had a 4 speed with the 12R motor in mine, then upgraded to the 5 speed box, used the factory 5 speed driveshafts and it was all bolt in, no problem at all. The 12R was getting a bit tired, so I upgraded to the 18R, the motor was sourced from a wrecker, in fair sort of condition, blows no smoke with no leaks after I changed all the seals and new timing chain. But, the motor could use a rebuild as it is a bit gutless, I do run 32 muds though. Motor still has standard cast exhaust manifold, so maybe extractors would free up some ponies also.

You are lucky is TAS then, having little in the way of limits.

Only thing I found with my dellows bell, the housing did not allow for the flywheel ring gear, housing was little small, but was easily machined out with the router (bell housing extension was aluminium) and a bit of dexterity. The bronze engine mounts also needed some massaging with the file to fit the alternator, but all in all was a very easy fit in. The clutch cable recess needed a bit of work too.

You will need a specific 18R/22R to Daihatsu F20 adaptor.

The 18R (possibly the 22R as well) does not have a 'bell'extension on the rear of the motor, it is just a flat ended block, whereas the 12R had a bell cast into the block.

Hey Ron, I will take some pics for you when the site has pics enabled again.

It's a shame that the motors are so rare/expensive for you, they are common as dirt over here.

The 32's aren;t too bad actually, currently on some 7 inch rims but will look for an 8 inch rim for more fat and width. I'm still on the factory springs (reset a few times) so are fairly tired and sagged. The tyres don't scrub bodywork at all on the ramp, but do hit the front springs on full steering lock, the 8 inch rims will cure this (better offset). Performance wise, 5th gear is for downhills, but In the coming years I will rebuild the motor for a bit more go, but the 31's were okay powerwise.

The F20 for me is no daily driver, more of a hobby rig and labour of love. Poor thing is off the road atm with no brakes, cylinders need sleeving and new shoes and drum machining.

The interior (there are no pics of it on the site) is fully finished in black marine carpet, overhead cupboards and rear cargo area with slide out draw, black SAAS seats.

It's no weapon offroad but a heap of fun to drive, old skool and all that, makes you appreciate the other rigs in the driveway.

Troy.

Ok.. no my idea is to buy a Corolla of some type and swap out the motor/gearbox to the F20... the question is.. what do I buy ? The gearbox is joined to the transfer which kind of limits my choices I guess. The rareness of F20's is bad enough let alone being lucky enough to find a 5 speed wreck. Corollas are a dime a dozen over here. Dellow havn't replied so far, might have to give em a call.

You'll need to look out for a celica or similar, I think most of the corrollas had 1.6 motors or around that capacity. You wont get a gearbox to mount up to the transfer case, might be cheaper to keep the 4 speed and get some bigger rubber, the extra grunt from the new motor will help turn the hoops. The early T18 Celicas had the 18R, and the RN series (before 83) hiluxs also had the 18R, some later hiluxs had the 22R, but I'm not sure on the years. Ask Dumbdunce from this site, he's quite knowledgeable in the field of toys and associated data.

Hey Ron, I will take some pics for you when the site has pics enabled again.

Thanks Troy, I'll be lookin forward to it !!

and TX, hope you get things sorted. maybe you can take some pics of the final install.

I'm now looking at specialised japanese car wreckers for a lump, as soon as I can find one reasonably priced (hey, still in college, so got to buy myself my ocasional brewski's!), I'll get my self a 18 or 22 r.

Suppose tuning the ol' 12r isn't an option, because is seems that there's not much flesh around the cilinders to really overbore and fit some large diameter pistons.

Hmm -> Thankyou for your inquiry. Unfortunately we don't have any 5-speed conversions to suit the Daihatsu F20 but we can manufacture a bellhousing to suit the Daihatsu F20 4-speed to the Toyota 18R engine, cost of bellhousing is $350.

So... is an 18R a 2 litre ?.. not up with the toyota stuff.. and what size is a 3Y ? what size tyres should I find ? I think it has 31 ? or 35 (its dark now) :) they are 15's x 235 ? on Sunrasia rims.

I have some stuffs to do to it yet Elgor. but will snap some pix of it so far... have been puttin a single rear seat in it for my son, and fitted a Sony CD etc to the OH console.. needs a respray and some rust spots sortin.. flange is leakin again on the manifold... ^%(*&%^%... steering column has broken its mount... still steers ok moves a bit... mig time.. I'm wondering if the steering damper is stuffed/tight... prolly just used to the VL steering.. gonna move the battery to under the bonnet and use the under seat compartment for a toolbox. The front seats are toast and will nab a pair out of a newish Jap wreck.. Hyundai or similar.Tightened up the rear door latches.. heaps quieter.. and the drivers side was loose.. the rear doors I removed the alum latch block and cut the back out of mount hole to enable more travel. The spare tyre rack lock adjusted up ok.
All good fun.. I can tell its gonna be one of those toys ya spend heaps on and rarely use. But it sure is handy for towing etc., and the lad (6) loves it "the jeep" :)

The 18R is a 2.0L, I think the 3Y is 2.2 litre or 2.4 or something like that, still no powerhouse, but I think they will run on unleaded (3Y).

the 235 tyres you have are smaller than 31s.

You will have trouble fitting import jap seats to the rig and keeping the area under the drivers seat as a tool box, as the drivers seat slides all the way forward to allow entry to the space. Unless you can find some seats to match the existing slider mech. I fabbed complete new bases including the SAAS adjuster mech to use the factory holes in the body. I also moved the batt into the engine bay, had to source a batt from a Kia sportage to make it fit where I wanted it.

Ahh i see... well I intended to use the original sliders on new seats.. but the problem is the height of the seat itself.. I will need some Suzuki or similar "thin" seats. The new backseat looks pretty good, will get a black sheepskin cut down to suit.. should clean it up. The batt I was going to mound on the firewall.. 57 Chev like if there was room.. move the windscreen washer bottle etc. Not sure how... or where to mount the seatbelt for the back seat.. will have to use a lap belt I guess.. it has a belt lock bolted to the seat frame (out of a Tarago). Cant belive the amount of rattles this thing has.. I tightened up the back doors the side doors... not much underneath to rattle tho the bonnet is a bit loose when locked.. must find some thick underlay and some HD carpet.. anyone carpeted their roof before ?? the roof lining died years ago..

Cheers :)

Yep, I recarpeted my roof with some unbacked marine carpet to match the other carpet in the rig. Nice black roof. Used unthinned contact adhesive in a small gun to apply the glue to both surfaces.

The unbacked carpet is reasonably flexible and will conform to the surface of the curvy roof without cutting for the internal curves.

What is an 18R worth approx? asking for a mate who also has an f20

His just pulled it off the road for mods, possibly new diffs (maybe coils), and needs more power.

I have no idea... they are in early Hilux and some Corollas.. you can buy a whole car (corolla) in Tas for $500 bux or so.
