mine used to idle fast, and there is some white thing on the back of the carby with some kind of step thing. as the car warms up something moves down the step to decrease the idle.

mine was basically a line and couldnt use the steps coz it was full of mud.

sorry about my language, i dont know what things are called :cry:

but i am pretty sure if you have a look, you will see what i am talking about.

hope this helps

Wind the auto choke can back a couple of marks. Spray linkages with crc.

Basics boys, check the throttle cable adjustment & thet both the primary & secondary butterflies are coming back to the full stop. Check all the carby screws for tightness as they can come loose. Check all vacuum hoses to see if they are perished or off. Only ply with the choke when it is cold but check it when it is hot to see if it is coming off all the way. Is the ignition timing too far advanced? If all of this is ok then check further.

Several things will cause that;
1) The fast idle on the automatic choke. The white thing you mentioned with the steps in it. This is connected to the accelerator and the auto choke, when cold and you put your foot down prior to starting it lifts the idle revs so it won't stall whilst warming up.
2) As mentioned, stuck accelerator cable.
3) Idle screw out of adjustment.
4) There is a dashpot on the carby that stops the carby going straight to idle when you lift your foot of the pedal. It'll stall otherwise. It lowers the revs down over a second to the idle point.

As mentioned some of these issues are from mud and dirt so clean the carby off and spray with WD40 etc.
