diff noise

i got a wierd sound, which i assume is coming from the diff. when under throttle, there is a whiring noise coming from the back, and starts at about 60km. can't here a thing when coasting along with no acceleration. any ideas?

mine did this and it was pinion bearing... try unhooking rear driveshaft and driving it with the front hubs locked and in 4x4... so your only driving on the front wheels. might help you determine if it's gearbox, or rear driveline...
what type of vehicle?

To check the pinion bearing it is easier to wiggle the tail shaft up and down and across left to right if theres movement its bearing

yeah, what he said. didn't make it too clear did i. what i suggested to do was to possibly eliminate the rear driveline in the trouble shooting stage... sorry, yeah the best way to check pinion bearing is to see if it has slop, although i had to take my driveshaft off to feel any slop in the pinion by rattling the diff flange

if the bearing is not that old it might need a bit of tightenin..
