L28 to L28E conversion

Putting a L28E in my MQ patrol. Maqde tge mistake of thinking it was easy. HOW WRONG WAS I

If you decide to take this on yourself dont under estimate the problems you can run into...

Is the L28E just an injected version of the L28?
If so, what model car does the motor come out of?

the motor came out of a 85 280zx. the problems have been you have to make custom brackets to hold everything extra it has, mave th air flow sensor up to a higher postion because it mounts up front and low standered, new high volume fuel pump and as i found out today when i tried to drive it, it still wasn't geeting enough fuel so bigger fuel lines to go in and that was on top of the nightmare of getting the wiring loom and the other wires in and flowing power properly. It should be worth it, after all the standard L28 in the nissan is rated at around 88kw and the new onis at 126kw. And it looks like it should come in under $3200.

So its not actually called an L28E, its actually an L24?
Does it have a front or rear sump?
as the L24 motors out of the skylines have the front sumps and bolt in but the L28s have rear sumps

It is called a L28E ive been told, it came out of a nissan 280zx not a skyline, i know that cause the car is out the front of my place and the sump is at the rear.

Nissans engine codes are fairly simple to figure out what you have.
The first letter is the engine series. i.e. L, RB, VG, SR etc.
The following two numbers state engine capacity 20 (2.0L), 28 (2.8L) 30 (3.0L) etc.
The following letters then state what "options" the motor has. D - dohc, E - fuel injected, T - Turbo, TT - Twin Turbo, there is a couple of others i can't think of right now off the top of my head.
So thats how you pick the differences in motors say when you look at,
VG30, VG30E, VG30DE, VG30ET, VG30DET, VG30DETT, you know what each motor is.
Nissan thankfully keeps everything relatively simple, even to the point that the numbers used in model types in most cases indicates it's engines capacity aswell.

Thanks for that info rOck_mOnkey. I understood the lettering of the engines but i couldnt explain it better then that.

hey do you have any advice/things to do when doing this conversion? I'm currently doing it myself, and would like to get it sorted asap...I know it's a very old thread, but any help would be greatly appreciated!

wow sleekz big time grave dig!
think you were askin about this on patrol forum?
as long as you have the donor vehicle. it should all bolt on or there abouts. make sure you use the tank to as it could have 2 fuel pumps. low pressure and high pressure. all sensors where they should be and you should be fine to go.
remember when you put it in try to replicate how the wiring was in the 280. therefore easier to work out in wiring diagrams.

haha yeah I know it's an ancient thread, but I specifically looked to see if the member who posted it was still recently active, and is!
yeah I was asking about it on the Patrol forum as well, but there aren't really any other threads on there either about it, hence the grave dig!.
Luckily I've got both the Patrol and ZX genuine service manuals which even so far have made things much, much easier! and yeah I've got a whole 280zx, engine's about the only good thing on it though!

so q-ship you're "chuckles" from the patrol forum right? how's your rb30 conversion coming along?
I'm just getting ready to put the ZX engine into my Patrol, but a new gearbox mount I ordered was the wrong one, so just another set back!
Found that my extractors were pretty well destroyed too- huge rusty tear down the bottom, hanging on by a scrap of steel!
Any advice on the whole thing Marks4x4? it would be appreciated!

This is a grave dig and a half, i havent had this car for almost 2 years now. It is a good conversion. Looking back at it now it wasnt as hard as it sounds when i just read my post. Just be prepard to make a couple of mounting brackets for a few extra things, cant remember that much in depth stuff now. Finding a out of the way spot for the computer was fun, ended up hiding it behind the dash.
The motor is a good motor and u will be surprised in the difference between the 2. Im looking at the moment into getting a 280ZX for a daily driver and putting the turbo kit i have on it, should be a fun daily driver

yeah sorry, I'll try not to dig up a corpse again!
haha yeah I got the engine in today, found it's much easier with two people! I ripped my aircon box out from the passenger side of the cabin and reckon that'll be a great spot for the ecu to go; pretty much where it was in the ZX.
I shouldn't have too many hassles making brackets as it's pretty much all I do at work all day!
Yeah I don't know if you've driven a 280ZX before but they're awesome, I highly recommend them; very fast for an old car and lots of great unexpected features! If you turboed one it'd be just nuts!
I'll keep you posted on how my conversion's going.
