Somebody Check My Pants........

OK well i've gone and done it.....

Whilst checking out our fourby venue for next weeks trip, I've broken my front diff (among other things). It happened on the last hill of the day when i was a few metres from the top... I must have hit something which punched a hole straight through the housing and broke several parts inside. I guess the real problem came trying to recover in a backwards direction. With only two wheels driving it didnt matter where i steered and before i knew it i was half way down and just about tipped sideways. I couldnt even get out because i could feel the fez just balancing there. Anthony managed to tie down one side but we both new it wasnt gunna hold if it went. We were lucky because we heard channel 16 open on the uhf and we put out a call. After bout 20 mins some guys in serious rigs turned up to help us out....one of then drove round me (somehow) and then ran his winch round a tree with a snatch block. They managed to get me straightend up and we reversed down the rest of the way....We then limped home in two wheel drive to check out the damage......

Well the diff is @$#%^%. A hole the size of a golfball...

And now i've noticed that diff oil is leaking out the rear passenger side axel....its coming out near the brakes at a fair rate.

I was so shit scared that i was gunna role my pride and joy...eventually i just accepted that it was gunna happen. But i'm glad it didnt....kinda of took the focus off the diff too.

Anyway, i'm off to do some posting on diff repairs.

I KNOW HOW YA FEEL. I did a very similay thing. but i was crossed up sideways across the track. was trying to reverse down the hill when back tyres drove themselves out of the ruts and then it was all over. Roza started to tip so i dived into passenger seat and out the window. with my weight out of the drivers seat it leveled out and just sat there. only thing stopping it was the front drivers tyre was wedged in the rut sideways.

flagged down a BIG patrol to tow me out frontways and i actually tiped onto my side while being towed out. was a fun day already had paneldamage so all care went out the window.

really pissed i never got pics of it

Well its good to hear from people with close encounters too.....all my wife could say was "dont be in the car if it goes" and my father inlaw didnt need to say i told u so because i could tell he meant it.

When i look at the pix it doesnt seem so bad.....i guess everything just gets caught up in the moment.

pics dont really show how close it was to tipping though
i could make the rear drivers wheel lift of the ground by pushing it with one finger.

also it was allot steeper then the pics show..... never been able to capture steepness in a photo very well.

lessons to be learnt... need an exhaust jack. a hand winch, snatch block, more people with shovels and a bigger 4wd for our next trip :P

Jase called me yesterday but I was at work and couldnt answer... when I listened to the message he said"Croz... give me a call.. I'm in the shit.... Just give me a call"

It was in the same voice someone has when they have just finished spewing their guts out for the last couple of hours.... hollow and shaky..

The conversation was along the lines of "if this tips I am gonna be getting divorced".... :?

Anyway glad there was no major dramas (life lost etc) and you got out... If you want to change plans for Friday I can help you pull the diff out or do something about the rears...

Croz,
Thanx for your help mate.....it was good to hear someone's voice that knew how to calm down someone in a tippy situation. I look back at it now and it wasnt so bad. I mean it had to be close but it could have been worse. The diff failed on the last hill out which had a way around it anyhow. It could have failed down near the water which meant no way out.

The wife was ok about it too.......sort of. Dont think i'll be getting any for awhile but at least i still got my roza.

Wasn't too long ago I let my husband drive my rocky at landcruiser park. He took the line I told him not to take and of course he slid into a big rut, next thing I was almost sitting on the door handle, the holy shito metre was saying 35 degrees lean.
I learnt one lesson that day Men don't listen and I should do the driving!!!
Anyway s'pose i was just grateful he didn't roll it on me.
Does anyone know at what angle 4wds do tip?

would depend on many things
how top heavy it is ( what gear are you carrying and where is it stored )
your suspension would play a big factor. if you what some of the extreeme rigs on coilys there very tipsyand lean all over the place usually with someone on the outside holding onto the roof walking along with it.

I dont know at what point i was gunna tip but it felt close....would be good to know the exact limit at which it was gunna go. But then you'd just push it to that limit all the time hey....

Ah yes been there done that and more than once. I was saved by my passenger opening their door believe it or not and it propped the truck up, till we could use the hi lift and pack stuff under the wheels. Bent the door, but that was easily fixed...plus my Rocky is a POS so I don't care how it looks now.
I have also smashed my front diff in before, luckily it was only the housing and not the guts. Still I know how horrible the feeling about tipping is and also the whole need to fix the diff thing. Hope you got the details of the bloke that helped you out...I mean brotherhood of fourbies is cool and all that, but even cooler would be if you dropped a carton of crownies on him...cheaper than pofessional recovery.

Cheers,
Muddy

So......am I the only daihatsu person that has rolled his truck and lived to tell the story ??? ;)

Once upon a time in a land far, far away................

it all happened slow motion..glad I was belted up.....all the stuff in the back fell out.....but I was lucky, 'cause it landed back on its feet again.
Bit shaken..got Moose to drive it back up the hill and I drove it home !!

As for the 'shitto-meter'.....I wasn't paying that much attention to it at the time, but It still works !!!

I came pretty close once, but it was only ever gonna flop on its side, not roll right down the hill (powerlines track at lithgow... near newnes).

From memory as it happened my eyes were nowhere near the roll meter... you just dont think to look at it when it is worth looking at... too many other things going on.

put the snatch, (winch ext. strap or what ever it was) around the column next time. already has saved me! :D had it wraped around a tree. tree lent over nicely, along with my car.

ive always wondered if the factory inclinometers do a full loop when ya roll.
