Has anyone installed a front diff by themselves? thinking of getting the housing from a wrecking yard and then rebuilding the parts....not sure on the price of this.

buy reading ur story and of the possibilty u have broken teeth in ur diff or something like that it would just be the housing u will be buying from the wrecker
1wheels off
2drive shaft off
3backing plate on diff off
4axles out
5 pop the fucked diff out and pop in the newy, using 80/w90 oil

Now would be a good time to get the front diff welded into a locked diff.

Some people do this after the front diff dies. :D

Is there a trick to funning the freoza as a RWD? You cloud just drop the front out and work on it later, or get it assessed while running around with just the rear in.

I was just wondering about how to block the output hole for the front driveshaft so as to avoid oil pissing out of the transer...?

weld the diff and just get a housing. I would have done this myself but i snapped teef off the crown wheel aswell as the spiders and then snapped the bearing caps and pushed the entire ctr through the botom of the diff housing :?
Tip. back off the power when airborne. http://groups.msn.com/EXTREMEOFFROADPHO ... PhotoID=87 [/url]

I did this as well, broke the spider gear, the bits went between the ring gear and the housing, cracked the housing and the ring gear.
If the ring gear was ok i would have just welded it up.
Got a second hand frond diff for $175 + postage.
No real dramas in swapping it over.

By the way if anyone has a spare ring gear lying around i would love to take it off ya hands so i can fix up my old busted diff.

I put a rock through my housing and lost a few teeth in the process...new housing, welded up innards...all good...still running strong one CV and 2 years later :D

Well it looks like it wasnt my fault.......sort of.

A tooth snapped off and punched its way through the housing. I thought i'd broken it on a rock or something.

Got a front diff coming for 400 bucks with 6 months warranty. I could get it slighlty cheaper through other wreckers but i couldnt get the same warranty.

Hopefully it'll be all in on Friday with Croz's help and providing i get the part by then. Doing the rear axle seals as well as they decided to crap themselves at the same time.

The front wont be that difficult from the look of it...

There seems to be some complications on replacing the rear axle seals from what it says in the manual... grinders and such involved...

I have no idea.......only wanted to ask as a last resort. Hopefully it will all be a DIY job.

I am having an issue at the moment...did i break the diff because i went too hard or did it go due to internal failure which was unavoidable? I really need to know the answer to this because it determines what happens in the future...

I had the same problem.
I'm for sure that in my case it was my faut (driving to fast...)
I also bought a diff from a wrecker which works well since 3 month.
Last week I broke my front axle joint (the outside one on the right side). Seems that the front axle and diff is a pain in the ass on Ferozas.

Its probably a bit of both.

Check the CV while your at it. Thats your next weakest link. Mine was stuffed when I traded.

$400 for the diff!!! I can get a rear GQ diff with lsd and the ratio I want for that!

Mat have a look at the vid from the Watagans..... I you went anything like I did when I snapped mine it's your fault...

If you were driving miss daisy and it went it's probably just wear and tear... :x

The important thing i you had fun and you learnt from it.

I learnt after my little escapade at the Watagans that I needed a bigger truck that wasn't so easy to put airbourne and that Ferozas are quite capable in 2WD whith a little run up... I'm a sucker for going airbourne... I mean why drive when you can fly right!!! :D :D :D

Arggggggggg i feel sick.....

Croz, if u hate the smell of diff oil, try working with it when u've got a hang over. :drinking:

Anyway, we got the front diff in without too many problems. It's had oil in it overnight and there hasnt been any leaks......yet.

The old diff had a small gear about the size of a 50 cent piece which had shattered into several pieces. I think it was that which punched out the housing. As Croz pointed out, it's possible that it might have shattered more than one of these gears. As soon as i get the film developed we'll post a link to the pix.

The axle seal proved to be a little more complicated and we ended up borrowing an axle remover tool from the local mechanic. As it turned out there was another seal in there which i didnt have the part for.....so it's a matter of waiting for that to come in.

All in all it's been a pretty good sucess so far and it's given me plenty of time to fix other things as well, likes brakes and over looked servicing.

Special thanx to Croz.........without ur help i'd still be trying to remove the steering knuckles.
