Manualising an Electronic Auto

k, posted this in the zuk section but didn't get much response, so thought i'd do it here.

i'm looking to swap a late model electronic auto into the vit when i do the dual cases. but i am not getting the computer with the auto. so would it be possible to run the auto 'manualised' (ie. i have to manually change gears) and have a simple switch on the lever to manually lock it into 4th (overdrive)?????

any info would be good

My understanding is that you can run a manual valve body to have it as a manual shifted auto - then have the lock-up in the torque converter set to a switch.

After speaking to a Torque Converter mate (used to work at a shop) he said that the only problem with that is if you leave the switch on, i.e. torque converter locked, you will burn out the converter oh so quickly.

thanks meldge, any info is good info

i'd probably set the overdrive switch up that it'd automatically disengage when it was taken out of 4th gear

That would be good, hard to do though wouldn't it.

If you use a 4 speed box (3 speed and overdrive) setting the switch to automatically disengage when taken out of third it probably could be done. But if you don't turn the switch off, next time you change to third, wouldn't it go straight to overdrive (fourth).

You wouldn't just be able to use a microswitch on the selector (or something like that) it would have to be much more complex so that it turns it off altogether. So the switch to turn it on would have to be like a momentary type with some sort of control box that when a press of the button happens it turns on, but then if it happens again, or is taken out of third, it turns completely off.

Someone correct me if I am wrong as I just blabbed a heap of crap down then...

cant wait to see the responses to this one?

when you find someone who will investment cast a new valve body and machine it for you, please let me know as i have other gearboxes i need done?

If it is controlled electronically you should be able to then control the gears manually.

Although this is not suziki specific here is a very comprehensive write up of swapping an auto into a jeep TJ.
http://www.stu-offroad.com/aw4/index.htm

Notice all of the tech related to the wiring loom and harness creation.
You can build a switch and your own loom to control the auto if you know what all the stock wiring controls.

See here for a manual shift kit that just uses a rotary switch to allow full manual control of the auto box.
http://awshifting.bravehost.com/custom.htm

I know this is not suziki tech, but I thought I would add this information to see if you could use it or at least give you some ideas on making it work.
:D

cheers

thanks zzzz, the second one is sorta what i was imagining seting up......obviously not with a rotary switch like that, but possibly with push buttons for gear changes, or just using microswitches on the normal gearlever.

And some more info, and prices for some boxes...

Manual Valve Body automatic transmissions
Some automatic transmissions have a "manual" valve body. These transmissions are generally limited to sports cars or race cars. A "manual" valve body allows the driver to shift gears at will, similar to a manual transmission, but with no clutch.

Some manual valve bodies are also capable of "semi-manual function". In this case the transmission can function as a standard automatic OR it may be shifted as a manual transmission.

I would prefer to have it manually shifting through an auto stick shift, with a B&M in place... Pro Ratchet of course  ...

I like the thought of the Auto/Manual Valve Bodies, best of both worlds.

a b&m shifter might be a little too much bling for my old zuk :D

anyone else got any info or links

If i can get ahold of a wiring diagram i'll problary be able to help you wire some setup for you, don't bother running the lock up torque converter for what you want you'll burn it out

You might be able to do it with micro switches on a B&M Ratchet shifter

Antt's now got the wiring diagrams :) and to do a lock-up would need valve body mods on this auto.

well i've had a quick look at the stuff that cj sent me (there is like 300 pages of info), and its possible to drive it manually it seems, with L being first gear, 2 being 2nd gear, and D being 4th gear gear

it also has all the voltages needed to feed the solinoids to change gears, so might be able to figure out a way with switches or something to trigger each change.

will have to investigate and read some more :)

its pretty complex with a self-diagnostic system built in, but i'm sure we'll figure something out
