hi all,

just these past couple of days, my vitara has developed an oil leak.

all i can see, is that it is from the rear end of the engine block (sump seal?) and where the engine and bellhousing? are?

i'm assuming there shouldn't be any oil in the bellhousing, (where clutch is) and if there is, i'm in trouble. haven't had much time to have a good look and clean it up.

is this common? what could it be? maybe a seal of some sort, and hopfully not anything major. i'm trying to fing out what it is first, before i start taking it apart, it is my DD.

thanks for any help.

It's not coming from the disributor? They have a o-ring that is prone to leaking and running down the back of the engine.

leak #2

assuming it is the rear crankshaft seal, how hard is it to change?

can i do it myself, or do i need to get a mech to do it?

i figure i need to drop the gear box out, and also take the clutch off. this means if i do it myself, i need to have all the torque settings to put it all back together, that means i have to get a torque wrench as well....

if i have to take the clutch out, i might as well replace it? what do you all think? if i do replace the clutch, what should i get?

thanks
steve

Before you pull the engine or gearbox to replace a crank seal I would try the easy stuff, like the rocker cover gasket, I have replaced 1 on both of my 1.6's.
Run your finger along the top of the block just under the rocker cover at the rear of the engine 2 days after giving it a good clean.
