MadCruisers little problem.... POLL

Ok, was chattin to MC on msn about his little problems in regards to his gearing in his Cruiser.

He has a 4.2 diesel.

lifted and would like to run 35's.

He drove with the 35's just recently and it sucked big time on hills and fuel economy went thru the roof!!!!

Now hes done some research, and has a few options here....

Leave standard,

Change the diff gears - to WHAT?? 4.3s or 4.8s as there are no 4.6s available aftermarket to suit 80 series.

Change the low range gearing with rockhoppers/gearmasters.

Now seeing problem is that if he changes his low range to the gearmaster/rockhoppers.. his sand driving will suffer with the 35's.

I have suggested to him that he keep his gearing standard and his low range should be good enough to run the 35's offroad and run some 33's for road/sand use.

But i feel that he is looking into getting diff gears done as he doesnt like to ride the clutch if the going gets tough.

What do you think fellas??

Ive put up a poll to ask what you all think and what he should do.. or what you have done with your 80 diesel.

BTW he is plannin a turbo sometime in the future.

Cant do the transfer gears in an 80 series. The transfer case is too narrow, and no one makes them to suit. You can go for the Cruiser Crawler box from Marks, but its $3500, just to buy it

Meh, ive put up with the 35's and std gearing, you get used to it. I just turbo charged it, that sorted it out

Go the 4.8s and run 35s ful ltime. That way you can get bigger play rubber when you get sick of 35s.

Then also the addition of a turbo... :P

Why would you want to burn a Toyota for a Nissan, that would be like a backwards step in evolution, like Man to Ape.

But then again people on this site... :finger: Especially the talk of Nissans... :finger:

Turbine the beast! you wont need to touch anything, and you will have warranty keep the ratios as are...if u want a set of 4.3's with 35's get some 100 series diffs under there...

Dont worry bout the part time conversion.....

Spend it on a turbo :) and some 4.3 gears run 35s all day :D

I run 36" TSL's on my 80 series and yeah the gearing sucks, but you do get used to it. I drove some fairly steep stuff yesterday. 1st gear instead of 2nd. I have a 4.2 ltr diesel in a dx (part time) model. Just go the bigger tyres and youll get used to the gearing.

If you don't think you would ever go bigger than 35s, then give the turbo a go first.

If you need more grunt, then go the 4.3 diff gears.
You should find that would be plenty, might even then be able to go bigger rubber with the 4.3s ratios without any hassles.

As it is big $$$, look into the future aswell. Do you see yourself going bigger than 35s for playtime?

Just plan ahead aswell as for now. I am looking into totally rebuilding my 4B, but it might be cheaper for me to start again, but only if done the rght way.

4.56:1 diff gears are available, but best value for money would be the turbo, my recently squashed 80 ran 5" lift, 35's and turbo with stock gears, would pull at 120km/h+ all day long and fuel economy was fair to good depending a lot on how hard you drive. as good as 11l/100km if you stick to 90 - 100km/h, very rarely need to change down on the highway.

Where could i find the 4.56:1 gears ????

Snake Racing only sells 4.3:1 and 4.88:1 gears also they list at $750

I've got a 4inch lift plus 2 inch body with 35 claws

might have to get them out of America? Randy's is bound to have them. I think Jamie Smith is running them in his 80.

but turbo it up and you won't need to change the gears, better highway rpm and about the same price as re gearing the diffs.

As said above all you need is a turbo & you wont need to muck with the drive line but looks like you are more interested in the gearing option. May be cheaper hey.

BTW- wouldn't those noisy Claw's suck on an daily driver ???

Noise don't bother me as i am deaf and i've got my music turned up....

Another person mentioned that if i bought a Part time kit, it would help transfer most of the drive to the rear.

Thinking of going this way first with the part time kit, then see how much has been improved. Next mod will be the Turbo

all of the drive the drive will be to the rear.
until the hubs are locked in and the centre
diff lock button is engaged. :)

You mean "all" of the drive. ;)

I also have the part time kit on my 80, worthwile mod i recon but dont expect too much performance wise.

As for the Claws theres a bloke driving a 80 around here with 35" claws & i can hear him coming at the end of the street. :P
