Bad Ju Ju

I've got some bad Ju-Ju nosies coming from my motor

Tappets have been noisy for awhile when the engine is cold (tac tac tac). Once it warms up, everything frees up and all is good (tried that gunk in the oil and it works for a week or two then tac tac tac).

Last night I hear a buzzing noise and figure "bugger, radiator fan rubbing on the bottom of the shroud again". Then I remembered I took the bottom half of the shroud off because of the body lift, oh oh!

Lift the bonnet and give the accelerator linkage a nudge. I hear a plastic hollow sounding "buzz buzz buzz" (like the noise a peice of cardboard makes flapping on the spokes of a kids bike wheel).

No not from the shroud, dem noises is coming from under the rocker cover

Goes away when motor heats up until it is under load (any type of load).

What is going on :?: head is 4 cyl, SOHC, 12 valve.

Fraying timing belt? Frayed bits hitting something on the way thru', they do slightly different things depending on the load?

Stab in the dark.

Just went out and checked, it is a "chain jobby". I thought the tensioner is a slide? How would it make that sort of noise? Not doubting, just curious. either way, it is going to be a bugger of a job to fix if it is.

Easy fix,top up with "Black Magic " additive ,warm up on way to local
Patrol dealer and trade it for a 4WD.

Ok, think I have found the source of the noise... catalytic converter

I got under the car and pinpointed it straight away. Don't know what is loose in there and could not find a leak but once it warms up, things must expand enough to hold things tighter. Buggered how the sound was travelling back up to the engine bay like that.

Just as a side note, I think the Raider will be going. If the engine does blow, cost are crazy, head re-build $1000, used engine from wreakers $1750-$2500, engine re-build $3500

Looking to trade it in on a GQ and cut my losses (bloody thing cost $20000 just 5yrs ago and now worth around $6000).

Possibly a loose heat shield??? Try a couple of large hose clamps around each end of the cat. The spot welding can come loose due to heat cycling allowing the shield to rattle like all crap. Happens on the Kia too....
