Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Anyone had problems with the Big Bore adjustable Tough Dogs.'

I had one fail on Sunday. Seems like the piston inside is picking up on compression and then sticking before letting go and extending with a bang.
The shaft going into the body of the shock seems to be wobbling around. I am hoping this is a one off problem.

Shocks are 8 weeks old.

Have you got em off the truck to see if they are bent???

Are they the right size so they are not bottoming out too hard before bumpstops or wanting to over extend on drop?
Definitely no dings in the outer shell?

I haven't heard to much about these. Did you have to modify anything to get em on the front?

bugger huh, Im running tough dogs and find them to be awsome .. Hopefully its just a one off . Keep us informed on what happens with the warranty claim.....shane.

if anyone is after strong shocks, go for the skyjacker "platinum series".
22mm shafts, monotube (3.2mm wall), real big eyelets, integral bumpstops, etc. i tink they are even cheaper than the tough dog things, and they make them look pretty flimsy.

I would not be overly keen on a monotube (mainly cause I have dented so many shocks before) Prob a better ride but I guess.

The tough dogs have what looks to be an external bumpstop.
The adjustable ones have a 45mm bore and the non adjustable big bore ones have a 50+ or something bore.
The big bores have a 22mm shaft also and I think the adjustables are the same.

PLUS after all that they are adjustable which is something that can be useful.

the wall is over 3mm thick, roughly the same as what people are bending buggy frames out of. they can take a big hit.

normal shock bodies are 1 or 1.2mm.

that is thick I know.

Personal preference thing I guess. I am sure that even 3mm would bend with some of the poundings my shocks have had! lol

Out of curiosity when you say they have big eyelets etc would this interfere with mounting points you think?

One other thing I was always concerned with when buying a shock for length only etc that have not been made to suit a particular vehicle is if they will be valved correctly. Obviously the tough dogs are valved to suit gq's or 80's etc (ie heavy trucks). But some of the rancho's I have had I could swear that they would be better suited to a suzuki. A lot of people just by the biggest shock they can without being sure it is suited.

Just points that in this case would lead me to spend the few extra $ on T.D.

they come with a few different valving options, just choose what you want. i have ssen them on the back of a GQ with standard mounts no worries. some applications would need custom mounts though..

Warranty was good.

Replaced immediately on the spot.

Distributor had not seen this type of failure and was pretty keen to send it back to the manufacturers. The other 3 on the vehicle are fine.

mmm..lookin at using a set when I do my 4 inch lift in the next couple of weeks...but for 260ish a pot...they'd wanna be good.

...how have you found them?...on the harder settings, how is the body roll etc controlled...presuming you have your sway bars disconnected

yeah ,the sway bars are off. Im running them on 7 for the black stuff,and 2 or 3 off road. Still playing around with the road settings though, because back passengers complaining about the firm ride.Very nice shocks, only just fit though.On the front drivers side the rubber boot on the shok rubs the shock tower. Its only the rubber though so its all good. I ve always loved it when its tight anyway
