OK, I've read all the posts about this but need concrete info. Ive tried calling AUS4WD but havent had any luck getting hold of Sandy, so......

is anyone making helpful bits yet, ie bellhousing/adaptor, flywheel/adaptor etc.

I would like concrete info, not "i think xyz had the same bellhousing bolt pattern and might have used the gearbox from cba", but beggars cant be choosers.....

Ive got a complete front cut but would prefer not to use the auto, but thats always a fall back option.

Where to find comprehensive wiring diags would be great too.

Cheers
Daryl

For the wiring check www.promotive.com.au and follow the patrol or infinity links. Last time I looked they where there.

Thanks Turps. Looking for something larger, more comprehensive and tangible.... a photocopy of that before it was scanned even.... :D

Thats what zoom is for and print out a section at a time. and make your own A2 copy.

When we put the VH45 in mine Sandy made up an adaptor plate and welded it to the front half of the vh45 auto bellhousing. A lot of work involved but it did the job.

The GQ has two manual transmissions. The big cast iron "toploader" style thing known as a 50 series and the smaller alloy case "squashplate" style 30 series fitted to RB30 and RD28 engined wagons. The smaller 30 series, in its various forms is fitted to almost every rwd and awd nissan including 300zx turbo and gt-r skylines. If you obtained a 30 series patrol box and a 300ZX front half casing, clutch fork and flywheel, you have a bolt together proposition. As good as this box is they arn't indestructable and a custom adapter to a 50 series would most likely be cheaper.

OK.

So the 300zx (vg30?) engine has the same mounting pattern as the VH45?
VG30 flywheel will bolt to VH45 crank? both engines are internally balanced i gather, ie nuetral balance flywheel?
When you say front half casing I gather the bellhousing is not separate on these 30 series boxes?
The '30' series gearbox was used in pathfinders too, yes? is this the smaller version?

Sounds like were getting somewhere.

I should be able to get a 30 series front half case cut in the appropriate place and weld a simple adaptor plate on to take the 50 series box and use 300zx clutch and flywheel, voila?

What is the tcase used behind the 30 series box in patrols?

Thanks for the help!!

TX12A - same as the 4.2's

30-series is the FS5R30A, and I can't imagine it wasn't used in the Pathfinder and Navara, it's been used behind every VG-engined RWD/4WD vehicle in the USA anyway. 50-series is the FS5R50A/B.

Unfortunatly there is no manual gearbox, or combination of bellhousings , flywheels etc. that allows a VH45 to bolt up to any manual gearbox in existance. custom adaptors are definately needed.
search on the NICO forums in the infinity section for technical info on this.

Yer... whatever solution you come up with, ensure that it is documented in detail!

Got a guy checking the vg to vh part of the equation.

The other thing I was thinking was if others are interested in an adaptor and were prepared to split the up front development price we could approach Rod Hadfield or Hazard, otherwise i'll do the same as others and cut and shut the infinity auto bellhousing as a one off.

I might be, but there are many other issues besides the bellhousing with this conversion.

And my timing is probably at least a few months behind yours.

Because of the many issues, I've been thinking rather of doing a 5.0 commo motor conversion instead, as it's been done so many times before, and I am more interested in budget bang for bucks than the absolute bee's knees of V8 conversions.

I *think* that whoever developed a comprehensive conversion kit would find a reasonable customer base out there, as it's a pretty sweet motor.

I do kind of wonder whether there is a better gearbox than the one in the 4.2 gq. Although it's very strong, it's not the ultimate in neat, notchy shifting. I almost hate to say it but I wonder if there's a toyo box that it would be better to slot in, since you're making a bellhousing anyway. Toyota do make nice gearboxes.

Sorry, meandering a bit. I really feel the one thing I'm not completely happy with on the mav is the motor, so I've been mulling over a v8 conversion pretty mch since i bought it.

if z32 has a vg motor then bellhousing pattern is not the same as vh.
http://www.nissaninfiniticlub.com/zerothread?id=44745&page=2

Im using the gq box because its strong and cheap. Cant say the same for toyo boxes, they are either not strong enough or too expensive.

I think if you got a VH front cut for the right price and can do most of the fab work yourself the price wont be astronomical. I havent researched prices for commo motors but I wouldn't think you will beat ~2k for the vh front cut. Time will tell if that sort of dollars buys a decent engine or a pile of junk.

Sandy apparantly used a flywheel from an rb series engine, now I gotta find out if that is bolt up or they had to modify it?

More research.......

how are you planning to deal with emissions issues? run straight gas?

i assume that with an imported motor you can't just rely on it being a later model vehicle as you can with an oz-complianced donor vehicle.

i think the exhaust manifolds are going to be a bitch too.

i'm not trying to discourage or be negative, i am very interested in what you're doing and these are the challenging questions that put me off the vh45 a bit.

it's usually expensive to be one of the first to do any given conversion :)

best info i have is that emissions wont be a problem providing i use cats and original management, from guy who will blue plate it. this engine was in local cars in early 90's anyway.

exhaust manifolds will be the least of the clearance issues!!! this is going into a Rangie with patrol running gear. firewall clearance, steering box, clutch master cyl etc etc are all in the way, but nothings impossible right?..... right now all i have is a growing pile of parts and a pipe dream, you may well see all these bits in the for sale section one day.....
