Outer Limits 4x4 Board

G'day

As my rear diff is shagged, I have just pulled the tail shaft out to change the diff (soon), but as I would still like to drive around in it, how long can I safly drive on the front diff, without doing much damage to other front end components, Im not worried about the diff itself as it will be replaced aswell when the rear is done (Im putting in different ratio's..)

Can it wind up to much, or can I brake hubs etc etc

I wont be doing anything silly, just normal driving, but it will be on the tar..

After I removed the tail shaft and gave it a quick test run, I am just amazed as to how loud the rear diff really was... My god, its now quiet in the drivers position, lol....and I can hear the CD Player

as long as you have no locker in the front, and as long as you take it easy with the right boot you should be okay, just remember FWD's are shit, but you will be right,

you shouldnt have any transmision wind, as you only have the front driving, ive had mates do it before, and havnt had any odd effects that i know of,

had a mate drive around like this for 2 weeks in a hilux after snapping rear shaft and he had no problems.

you get weird looks when people see a 4wd spin the front wheels though

Unless your front diff is locked, it won't wind up at all. Wind-up occurs between the front and rear axles.

So basically you'll have a front wheel drive, and you can keep going like that as long as you're enjoying that cool feeling of being in a gigantic barina

I have done this twice...once in a Range Rover and once in a 351 Bronco. The handling is a bit strange if you tramp it...sort of wanted to change lanes. Other than that no probs

I tell ya what they drive terrible, all over the shop, If you give it just a little right foot the steering near gets ripped from your hands, and if you back off it does the same, Its hard to keep a happy medium..
