If I got one of these - and my laptop has a compactflash slot - what else would I need to get GPS up and running?

Has anyone done this or similar? I know nothing about GPS!

Apart from whats there you will need some software for your GPS hardware, and mapping software, this is the expensive thing in GPS Navigation. My Suggestion is if you want Sat Nav then buy the Hardware and the software together, that way you get some support for what you are buying and you know that they are compatible.

If you require any further Info PM me.

You would probably be better off with a USB based GPS like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 10172&rd=1

Once you have the GPS then you need some software to do stuff with it. If you just want to find out your position you could use this for free:
http://www.download.com/GPSDiag/3000-21 ... ag=lst-3-1

If you want to see where you are on a digital map you will need something like this for $:
http://www.oziexplorer.com/

I have set up a computer with oziexplorer with a garmin gps before but I believe the USB GPSs should work fine as long as they support NMEA 0183.

I have the same gps setup in my car as you bought, exept with a touch screen monitior, you will need a pc program to get the info from the gps,

I found the gps good and fairly easy to be reconised by the pc

I know its a bit off topic but I believe the best combination to be a normal handheld/vehicle mounted gps such as the magellan 320 combined with a laptop via usb or serial to be the most reliable option. If your laptop stuffs up while on the trail (laptops are not very robust, believe me) you still have the normal gps to get you out of the poo. If you've only got a flash style gps there is no way you can get your position easily, you would have to resort to traditional map reading :x (a skill everyone should have).

If your after a directing gps/computer system your best bet is to get one of the specialty units with their own screen. I believe these have gyro's and all sorts of other gismo's that allow them to operate even when the gps is temporarily unable to get a position.
