Transfer Case Oil

If anyone could tell me some info on transfer case oil for a TD42 Mav.
I put new oil (Dexron II) in about 5000k ago and decided to check it. Instead of a red colour it was dark and blackish. Is this normal?
Should I be using something else besides Dexron II?
Does the gearbox oil flow into the transfer case and vise-versa?
Appreciate some feedback on this one

Cant explain why yours is black, but mine has been in for about 10'000 ks and is still the original red colour. Maybe your gearbox and transfer are leaking into each other

I had that thought and if that be the case "Is there a seal between them that could be a problem?"
When I first changed the oil 5000k ago it was a dark colour then and I think it was oil the same as the gearbox. I changed to Dexron II because I seen it mentioned on this site. Perhaps it could also be that the residue from previous oil has mixed with the new? I will change it again in another 5000k and hope it might start cleaning out the residue from old. Even if I do it a few more times at lesser K's the oil is only 2L worth and not any huge expense. :?

Hi,
The Dexron11 is for series 2 transfer cases. Series 1 need SAE 80W-90 GL4.
What case do you have?

I asked penrite about the oils in the transfer and gear box as mine is a series 2 that is atf in transfer . They said to use gearbox manual light in both i think its 75 / 80 or something like that they said if the seal dose start to leak at least the oil is the same has been in there for 3 years now and no problems When i bought my patrol the dexron atf oil in the transfer was black that makes me think its not good enough since i changed the oils in both have been clean and no change in levels

If the gearbox/transfer case seal is leaking, the oil will run out of a small hole in the adaptor housing between the 2. The reduction portion of the transfer case has an oil seal contained in the front part, and the gearbox has a rear seal also. If either are leaking, the oil runs out the hole previously mentioned. Series 1 transfer--80w90, Series 2---ATF. Normally ATF goes very dark in color when its overheated (also smells pretty bad as well)

Ah! Now that brings another question. How do you tell if you have a series I or a series II. My Mav is a November 92 model.
As for oil use I checked a site at Nissan and they have recomended the use of ATF in transfer cases across all GQ models.

Pretty sure Series 2 from 92 onwards. I asked this a while back and someone stated that the main visual difference is the rear lights. Series 1 had the Reverse, Brake and Indicator on one light unit, whereas Series 2 has the Brake and Reverse only on the main light, and the indicator is on the rear bumper. Not sure if this is the best way to tell though???
