check the obvious things as suggested. I had a similar problem with mine - sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. After pulling it apart myself and checking i couldn't find anything wrong. After having an auto electrician rebuild it and again strip it down and check it the problem still occured sometimes. I think it depended on the position it stopped in. Sometimes rocking the car would move things enough for it to work. After getting really pissed off i ended up buying a new starter.

I pulled mine apart and soldered the hold-in windings back together and saved a $350 exchange job. Check to see if there is current getting to the solenoid first. If there is then its in the motor. fun fun fun.

Hi
Inside the solenoid, there is 2 pickups that cost $8 each that transfer current to the starter motor after the solenoid has pulled them together and meshed the gears.
One of them is stuffed, change it and you will be away with a reco starter, all except for the black paint.

bodylift baby! I can do it from the side :). But if you were going to test it i would hope you have the brains to disconect the wire and test it on its own!
