My 3.5l v8 is getting a bit tired and i am looking at repowering with a bigger enginge but not sure what i am after opions on what to put in
I was looking at the 4l engines that have been coming into aus but know little about them but hadn't ruled out the 4.6 or the 3.9. Most of the time she does weekend work but i also tow a 18"van on holidays

The 3.9 is a good upgrade, there's lots of them around (at least over here) the 4.0 and 4.2 are not so popular, if you're thinking of those two you may as well go for the 4.6 which has much more torque and is the strongest engine Rover made. I'd seriously consider your fuelling options though - the stock Rover EFi runs lean to get good emissions, but this seems to aggravate / accelerate the problems with cracked blocks and shifting liners. When I drop my 4.6 in I'm going to make damn sure it's tuned to run on the rich side! You can put your 3.5 heads and EFi onto a bigger engine but you *will* need to sort out the ECU, either get it chipped (pricey) or ditch the POS and fit something decent like
MegaSquirt.
Some info:
3.5.=89.5mm bore Std 3.5 crank
3.9.=94mm bore Std 3.5 stroke crank
4.2.=94mm (3.9 bore ) plus longer stroke crank
4.0 is the same capacity as 3.9 but uses later big journal crank and is cross bolted
4.6. = 94mm bore ( As per - 3.9 & 4.0) but uses later big journal (long stroke) crank and is also cross bolted as is is 4.0.
