Diff backlash

Have just recentley done 5 inch suspension lift on 80 series.
I now have a bad case of backlash in front diff. Diff seems to chatter when car is floating between, driving and coasting. It drives perfectly under load, accelearting.
The good news is that I have vertually no vibration coming from front driveshaft and uni's seem to be copping well.
Anyone had this problem with diff and how can it be fixed?

the backlash in the diff can't be altered by raising your vehicle, it sounds like your uni's dont like your driveshaft angle.
just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks Chris. I thought that was the case too, but it was fine before lift and now is not.

check for wear between your uni outer spline and the outer axle flange(where the hub locks normally go on early models)they get to much play in them and make it feel like you have diff backlash. had same problem and replaced the flanges its fixed now.if you knock the dust cover off the outer part of the hub and move diff centre back and forth you should be able to see movement between the splines.

Take your front shaft off and drive it again in high range, you will most probably find it is the front drive shaft causing this, as it only occurs when coasting. Im presuming you have corrected caster aswell as doing the lift, this moves the front diff in line with the shaft, but the gearbox eng has angle, and this does not work to well. 2 easiest ways to fix is part time it, or double cardon shaft the front.
