I am considering....

1991 Surf with VP Dunnydore bolted to the factory R151, duals, sitting on 80 axles, 37 MTR's.

Heres the story:
I done toooo many Supra conversions and my current wreck with the 7M-GE is going well but its a mongrel to get water proofed. I keep busting hilux modified CV's and axles. Its only got 2 doors and with kids.. blah blah !......Supra Overload !!!! ( done about 15 now and getting 4-5 emails / phone calls a week about conversions )

Anyway time for a change !

I own a 2L-TE 1991 Surf - daily drive - donor wagon !
I have some 80 axles in the back of the garage. ( 4.1 no factory lockers )
I have the duals from the old wreck ( also have template for R151 to gear driven xfer case adapter ).
I have the 37 MTR's

I have driven a VP powered Lux and liked the low torque - should work with the 80 series 4.1's better than a Supra, and the water proofing is pretty simple ( we do alot of rivers here so getting wet is guarenteed )

We have no Rock / Tuff Truck comps here so its only going to be a trail toy !

Its a whole new game doing a Commo for me, so checked Marks site for conversion parts / info and found the website a bit of a shocker !!

Questions:
Can I get a bellhousing for a VP to R151 from a 2L-TE ?
I spotted the Auto to Manual flywheel kit, anyone used one ( all auto commos over here ) ?
Anyone running 4.1 diffs with a commo - in a lux ?
Anyone running 80 axles under a lux ?
I've got a Lux LSD centre with Lockrite fitted can I use this in the Hi Pinion 80 front diff ?

Anyone want a cheap 7M-GE ( I'll toss in the spare 7M-GTE as well :) )

Any help mucho appreciated

Mike

Hey champ

Im about to do the V6 conversion on my Bundera

I decided on the V6 over turbo 1Gs and the like due to the torque too. Yes they do make some sweet power, but I still want to be able to tow and stuff.

I have the R150 G/Box and will be using the Marks adaptor kit!
Try

http://www.marks4wd.com/lc-rj70holdenv6.htm

- this page mentions the adaptor to the R series G/Box. (are the 150 and 151s the same??)
We have a problem of only a claimed 2% of commodores being manuals, so is hard to find 1 over here too, I have a manual in my DD but dont really want to start pulling both apart!

Hope this helps!

Hey Mike

Not all the Commies are auto (mate by Methven has a 5 speed)
Do you think that the 80series cv's are stronger than the lux ones?
What will you do with the rest of the '84 Surf?

Would it not be easier to just put a commodore motor in the '84?

Anyway thats my 20 questions, talk to you later.

Helped heaps, Thanks. The R151 is the same bolt pattern as the R150 but has a lower first gear.

If I can find a 5 speed then thats cool
The 80s are stronger than the Lux ones - how much I'm not really sure, There's two types - the stronger one after about 1993 or so I'm told. I need to some more research.

Not sure on the time sacle for doing this so the 84 will hopefully last a while yet, then will be wrecked out for parts. I really want to go 4 door.

The 80 series CVs are shit load stronger than the Hilux ones. You could argue that they are as strong as if not stronger than Nissan ones – if you get a chance have a look at them side by side. If you get them treated, the only weak link in the whole set up will be the HP centre however seeing the Lux is a fair bit lighter, you might get more life out of it anyway….

Update Time

I have picked up a 1996 Auto 1KZ-TE Surf ( rolled ) with only 90K's on the clock for $2000. It runs like a dream and looks like shit !!

So the plan is now:
4 Door Surf, 1KZ-TE, Auto ( A343f ), Dual Xfers, 80 axles, 37 MTR's

Anyone done a Dual Xfer behind an Auto ??

Mike

Yes, I have got 80's under my lux, must be one of the first in Oz.
Mine has 4.1 centres with 35 inch tyres still runs OK with the stock 2.8D though from what I hear this must be some kind of miracle. VP or VR Commo V6 is coming wihin six months hopefully.

The conversion isn't straightforward, and I stuck with leafs so coils would need good design skills on top of that.

The biggest problem you will have if you want to keep the Surf as a road car is with the offset of the rear diff. I am not running duals, and moved the rear diff further back (and my D/Cab already has longer wheelbase than your Surf) and the driveshaft angle is still pretty extreme (although with the d/cardan vibration free at present).

My best advice- and I would do it this way if I ever did it again- is sell the 80 gear and use GQ diffs.

If that's not an option I think you will have no choice but to cash in the duals and replace with another transfer with offset rear output- like Cruiser or Bundy- that's what I'm considering also.

If you need pics PM me your e-mail, I'll help with any questions. All the best.

Josh.

Thanks for the info - I did notice the rear offset and thought it may cause trouble with the petrol tank. Looks like the driveshaft maybe an issue as well

Thinking cap on :?
