Auto or Manual GQ SWB. approx 50% blacktop

I have been looking for a GQ or MAV for a while now and almost bought a GQ 88 SWB Diesel for $7k7 but it had 300k and lots of rust and needed respray, seat, stering wheel, rear bar. + the rest of the goodies, Snorkel Lift, tyres, etc. So if any of you want a chalange its in Vic.

I need to sell the current car before i buy one and that is looking like it will take a while.

I want to know if you guys recon the Autos are any good in the mud.

I understand they are better on sand. :?:

But is it a purest thing or is a manual the only way to go.?

Thanks.

PS.

Great forum and heaps of great information.

I have learnt lots.

try the archives, theres numerous threads on auto v manual.

theres also a GQ body forsale in the FS section .. could be a cheap shorty.
price is right, and the engine is hardly run in. they are good for 5-700,000klms

As long as either is in good condition they both have there +'s.
The auto is weaker though.

I'd reckon the auto is better in mud for the same reasons they're better in sand. But yes, they are weaker. The manual gearbox (behind TB42/TD42) is virtually a light truck gearbox while the auto is a car-type auto. The auto's can cost big $$$$$ to fully recondition - can be around $5,000 depending on what goes bang.

I had this issue when I purchased my mav. I bought a manual as I didn't want to spend $5K if the auto died. If I was buying new I would buy auto. My last 4wd (NL Pajero) was an auto and it rocked in the bush except for going down hills.
