starting problem disco 1

Hi guys I'm new to the forum and would like some assistance.
Just got back from a few weeks away, went into the garage to take my v8 disco for a ride, wouldn't start.
I have spark from the leads, and can hear the petrol pump working when I turn the key on.
My thought is that the fuel filter needs replacing, judging from the look it's been there for a while, I know I should've done it when I bought the car and did the oil air filters and such.
Anyway, she was running fine before I left and now nothing, could this be my problem or does anyone have any other ideas?
Any assistance would be greatly apreciated.

Not the fuel, my friend. Although you could check it with an inline gauge (for pressure testing). Don't try to 'crack a line' or you could have high fuel under high pressure take out an eye.
You could remove an injector and see how it is squirting to ensure the pressure is adequate to operate it. Not for too long though, or you could have an unpleasant explosion.
Fuel filter blockage does not occur instantly. It will be a gradual decrease in performance you will not really notice. In extreme cases it will allow the engine to start and then starve and stall under load/revs.
Your problem probably lies in the other sensors attached to the injection system. Not to say it isn't the pump, a blocked filter could make it fail, but it is more likely to gradually fail rather than instantly.
Why not test your local NRMA bloke? I'm sure he would appreciate the challenge!

Flat Petrol ? the new ULP goes off very quickly.
Injected Rovers have a habit of over fueling on cold start.
Remove and clean the spark plugs,check if they are damp.
Some people wont use it but a small dose of ether will often clear the problem as well,an overdose can blow head gaskets etc.

Thanks guys I think that I may have to call NRMA, I'm aware of the high pressure fuel system. I have a manual that shows how to depressurise the system and such. Anyway thanks again, I'm sure I'll get my baby back on the road in no time

Thanks for your input guys, turned out it was stale fuel. Fouled up the plugs.
Rekon I'll be running premium unleaded a bit more often now.

Sounds like a plan, just stay away from optimax it tends to burn exhaust valves on 3.9 rangies and discos from the info I have read.
