On a gq 1991 4.2 turbo(aftermarket)diesel,is the breather on top of the tappet cover suposed to be connected to the air cleaner box? i know on the standed 4.2 they are. mine has never been connected just hangs down the back of the motor near the firewall. wanting to connect it up or will it effect performance?

nope it will only breath the oil, or shit into the airbox like standard one does

I cant imagine why the PCV valve (valve on top of the rocker cover) shouldnt be connected as it was with the nat asp motor. After my engine re-build, i accidently left mine off as well and you could really smell the fumes inside the cabin. In the first 500km's a bit of oil came back out of the breather but with nearly 2000km's on the clock now, there's almost none.

After turbo-ing my truck, I just got a longer section of hose and run it down the back/side of the engine, poked it into a handy hole in the chassis rail and secured it with a cable tie.
If you don't want to do that or connect it back to the airbox, set up a catch can and terminate it there.
Cheers

It must be connected by law to the inlet tract. With a turbo it will be the air filter, other engines it will be the manifold or the inlet tube before the manifold.
If the engine is ok it wont leave much crap in the manifold/turbo. If the engine is buggered then it will from blowby.
Best to hook it up as is an easy defect for the wallopers if they know what they are looking at.
It will only affect performance if the engine is buggered & blowing heaps of fumes.
