Weird Question

Post by DiscoDino »

With the idea of keeping my Disco light (read: "not heavy" ) during competitions, I was thinking of shedding the 5 doors off of it.

What is the weight savings that I will be doing? Anyone have a clue? And what may be the negatives of running the truck without any doors at all (there is an internal rollcage with belts)?

Thanks a bundle!

Dino,
I just finished stripping a 2 door and was thinking while i was doing it 'where is all the weight in these things?', then I pulled the doors off........they are bloody heavy!!

What is removing the doors going to do to the integrity of the body? Will that let more twist be induced? is the cage tied to the chassis or body only?

Removing and refitting doors is a pain in the arse anyway, but you will shed a fair bit of weight. If you take the back door off too and yours are electric windows Im guessing youll probably shed minimum of 100kg, maybe as much as 200?

Im thinking it would only be worth it for the increase in visibilty and saving them from panel damage.

Have fun

Daryl,

Tha is great news! With al 5 doors off, I can shave ~200KG! that is great, that will make up for my winches and bumpers and so forth!

The cage will be tied only to the cab, as I will have a 2" body lift, and the greater distance between the chassis and the cab will allow for evenmore flex, which is not something I want the cab, cage, and chassis experiencing...

I think it might be a good idea for me to take them off for the reasons you stated. It might be well worth! Thanks great!

Dino,

Discoverys especially witha bodylift really flex in the chassis ramp your disco and try and open the back doors.............I don't recommend removing the door as you will bend your body.

Driving my old disco like this caused some buckling around the rear inner gaurds.

It'll bend the body for sure!! The body flexes like crazy, and hte doors really help with rigidity.......

I can imagine how it'll flex, and that is a major issue, and true, I can imagine how the doors add to the rigidity!

However!!! Wouldn't the internal cage help keep the body from flexing too much for distortion? (please say yes  )
