I had someone describe an engine powered winch to me yesterday. They used to use it in the early 80s on a series 2 landie. It sounded much more reliable the the electronic ones.
Are the still used? Why arn't they popular? Can anyone shed some light on them?

Are you talking about a PTO winch.

I dont know. It runs off the engine rather then electricity

either pto or hydraulic by the sounds of it
the danger with these is that they wont get you out of a bog if the engine has stopped
im not sure on the performance / costs of them

One of the options was a crank pulley driven geared drum winch.
Another was the capstan winch.

Best I've seen was on a defender 3.9 Izuzu, ran off the transfer case, he had 5 forward whinch speeds and one reverse with throttle speed control too. I wonder what they'd be like run off the back of an automatic.

Pretty sure the LR requires a manule gearbox. ON the toyota it should work on an auto as the pto is on the transfer case thae same with a MK/Q Patrol. But not GQ's as teh output is on the front of the manule gearbox and the GU's dont have it.

Land Rover pto is on the transfer case, so should work with an auto box.

Well there you go, thought it was on the back of the gearbox for some reason.

Whats the go there....
I've got an old MQ with a PTO winch operating of the transfer case, 10 speeds forward and 2 reverse plus the speed of the engine. I've had to chain the ass of the car to trees to winch 4bys out of bogs where electric winches were starting to struggle with no worries. I recently got a GQ and thought i'd be able to transfer the winch to the gq but unfortunatly not. Anyone know why they phased out the PTO option on later models, especially not at all on the GU's???
Thanks

You can, but its changing the gearbox/transfer... so lots of $

$$
especially not at all on the GU's???
The market they are aiming for is not 4wding. dont need a PTO to pick the kids up do you?

Landrover offered a CAPSTAN winch powered off the engine crank via a locking dog arrangement. Special manila rope was needed and you needed to wrap 2 turns around the rotating bolard and put tension on the rope for it to grip the rotating bolard. The winch was limited in capacity and to release tension, the operator released tension on the rope. Disenaged for the road via the locking dog on the front of the engine crankshaft.

Depending on what year model GQ you brought it may be possible to use you old winch.
You will need to find the output bits for the gear box though and then get a shaft made up.
The output for the PTO is on the passenger side at the front of the gear box. If you have a look, it goes onto wear there is a flat plate bolted onto the side.
One thing that is different on the Nissan PTO is that there is only two speeds. Forwards and Backwards, as opposed to the other that are driven thru the gearbox. It also is possible to winch and drive just abit harder due to trying to match wheel speed and winch speed.
On mine the PTO is a genuine item with a Powerauto 8000lb worm drive winch.
They would have been deleted as a cost thing, as nissan were not getting many mining contracts. Even when Nissan deleted it as a factory opion alot of the gearboxs still had the necessary stuff on the inside to fit a PTO.

I have posted this before
If you have the later GQ g/box with no PTO plate on the side, you can remove the g/box,machine a hole through the flat on the side of the box where the PTO should be and drill and tap the holes to bolt the PTO on.
The PTO drive gear is inside the box on the layshaft still
Have seen this done successfully 3 times so far.
