Factory locker vs ARB

Thought I had better start a new thread...

Is the factory vacuum locker better than an ARB air locker?

I am thinking of getting one and I dont even know if I can get a factory locker from Nissan or anyone else anymore.

Can anyone give me the pro/cons of both?

I notice that a lot of our 4WD's in europe come out with factory lockers, like Hilux, Defender, Patrols - i.e. not optional.

factorylocker = speed limited.

Engage a factory locker at speed can damage it.

ARB i believe is the opposite.

Factory locker - cheaper than ARB

Factory locker - sometimes problems disengaging which takes a while on some when they get old.

they also have different weather conditions..

if you already have a genuine locker stick with it. If it aint broke, dont fix it.
if you dont, then go ARB.

Facotry locker = must be engaged under 10km/h. Once it is in you can go as fast as you want. This is to limit the force of one wheel spinning realy fast and then the other one catching up very fast. This also a problem with the ARB, as it can be engaged at any speed.

They both appear to be very strong. If you already have one leave it. If not might as well go an ARB easyier to fit (this is a guess).

Thanks for the advice.

I have a auto lokka in the front at the moment and was thinking of a manual locker before I do the Cape. The lokka is making some noises, I think it just needs the clearance adjusting.
I was worried that for a Cape trip as I am likely to be in 4WD a lot and I dont want my steering to be effected on the faster sections.
Which raises the questian, is it better to run in 2WD on slippery tracks between 60-80kmh in which case I wont have to worry about the auto lokka?

I know the constant 4WD cars are supposed to be more stable/safer on loose tracks at speed.

you are better off in 4wd if you can as the brakes work better and there is a shitload of bad stuff you have to slam the anchors on for :?

Also since you mentioned front. You cant get a factory locker for the front of a GQ. And am pretty sure that is in anymarket. Thoe factory lockers people are talking about are only for the rear.

So you are either left with what you have autolockers (lockrite, detriot etc) or ARB. Dont think there are any others for the Patrols.
