is it possible for the fuel return on the fuel pump to clog up? id imagine that this may cause a mess?

if you didnt replace the filter when you did carby then do it now
filter cheaper than pump
if still runs out check when it runs out of fuel ie up hill then pump is stuffed

For the pump, pull out the plugs, disconnect the coil lead, disconnect the fuel line and spin the motor over with the fuel line running into a container.
If it squirts it's still OK.
If it squirts and there is still the problem after fitting the new filter it's time to stick a gauge on it and see what it does at revs.
Also could be shite in the tank. I have had cars that have had crud settle in the bottom of the tank and then block the pick up after you have idled/driven for a bit.
