funny stuff about gear oils

Post by alfred the butler »

very funny stuff from the 80s list
My name is Don.  I am new to the list.  I own a 96 FZJ80.  It states in the Owner's Manual that when replacing the diff oil you should use SAE90.  Notthat easy to find.  Tried several auto stores and have not been able to find it.  I am being told that only auto dealers have it.  In the past I got it from a friend of mine who is an auto mechanic.

Is there any other gear oil that I can use? Was thinking about taking 40
gear oil and 50 gear oil, mixing them together to get 90.  Would that work?

Dont touch a thing..the rear diff should run special oil that a mechanic will know about...take it to him.
ps the cap ontop of the motor with 710 on it is not for water either.

I know someone that took over an hour to top up the oil level in his car.....by trying to pour it in thru the dip-stick hole. He's a nice boy, but not too bright! :D

Any liquid in there should work, as they are both some sort of fuild (water will even work). Its just that the internal components want last long. And in teh brake system it will most likely boil sooner.

Auto fluid/power steer fluid and or any oils will make the seals swell
and you will need a compete rebuild of everything.

If you are stuck - water is the only thing - it will boil quickly but at least it won't effect the seals badly - flush and refill with brake fluid asap !!!
