Re powering a R46 with a 18R motor

Post by brett43au »

Hi all I Have a old but good R46 Hilux 4X4 with a R18 motor with a 4 speed gear box. It is all in good condition but lacking any power or top speed. What would be a easy and chaep repower option . The present motor is fine it just lacks power and top speed. My preference would be for somthing that I could do myself.

Any advise would be apreciated.

Thanks
Brett

GDay mate, got a rn46 myself with a 18rg and a 4 speed. Easy fixes for a start would be a set of extractors and a free flow exhaust. A 5 speed gbox would assist on road legs. A holley carb to help the fuel side? It all depends what and where you want the power? Good Luck ps where you from

easy bolt in swap is a 22R (2.4L) or a 21R (2.2L)

the 22R you will find a good runner for around the 1000 complete

21R - good runing engine $150

There is some tricks, both engines will require the engine mounts off a 4wd 22R block, then both will bolt right in no problems to the original 4 speed

Done this myself
