Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi guys,

I'm trying to figure out what the prob is with my LN65 diesel lux:

In first gear, between 1 and 2 k rpm there's a real bad shaking, of the whole car, which is worse going up hill. It also happens to some extent in second, very low rpm.

I thought it was the centre tailshaft bearing, so I replaced it, which seemed to help a little bit, but now it's just as bad as it was before.

someone suggested engine mounts, but they look fine to me. Any definitive way to check em?

Not sure if this is related, but when I let the clutch out, I sometimes hear a metallic 'tink' kind of noise, and also when I back off the juice suddenly.

Anyone able to help out?

I have exactly the same prob and thought it was the centre bearing too until I replaced it.
I have my new engine mount here and ready to go in.
open your bonnet and turn your lux over without glowing it and watch the engine and you will see the bounce it gets and feel it.

I will be watching this thread for sure to be sure that I have got it right myself.

what do you mean 'without glowing it"??

I've had a look at the mounts and blipped the throttle (as much as you can 'blip' a diesel anyway!) and yeah, there's some movement, but I'm told this is normal???

EDIT: typo

I think hNm means to watch the engine as you run the starter without letting the glow plugs do their thing. Without glowing I know mine takes a couple of seconds longer to start and shakes and coughs and farts along for a second or 2 once running.

its hard to do engine mount in lux as thay have a steel plate so u cant see whats going on just replace them not much cost check gear box mount
and replace it leve all mounts lose drive car up and down drive way a few times so u do no stress one one way if u know what i mean it used to stop some luxes from that prob

i had the same thing but it dissapeared wen i rebuilt the gearbox and new clutch

benno that klicking sound you speak of .
i had the same problem and it was the cvs i the drive shaft so just crab you drive shaft wiggle it abit and see how much play you get or just take it to your mechanic and get it cheaked out cheers gavin

The metallic click and vibration would 99.9% point to a universe joint rooted, grab the drive shaft with one hand and the flange (diff& gearbox check both) and twist in opposite directions there should be no movement present, rotate driveshaft and try in different positions. Once again, 99.9% it will be the rear U.J.(diff end)

I have replaced my rear uni's and had two engine swaps since I have had the trouble which was only noticed once bigger tyres where added.

My point about not glowing your lux in the morning is basically the same thing as phippsy said. If I dont glow mine manually(solenoid stuffed) it takes about 15 secs to start and the engine bounces around and makes a real racket, I can see it when the bonnet is open and it is my last option so atm that is still my advice and I am confident.

I had a good play with the unis when I had the shaft out to replace the centre bearing. I couldn't feel any play moving them by hand but I've got a uni now that I'll chuck in prolly tomorrow. I know that the slip joint has some play though, and that's got me wondering whether I should or should not put the new uni in tilll I've got that sorted.

Two new uni's have made a huge difference, shake is nearly gone now. Still get the odd 'tink', prolly from the third uni that wasn't replaced.

Strange thing was, I could never feel any play or 'notchiness' in any of them, nor could a few other people that tried.
