diff centre swap

for all the tech guru's..

changed my rear centres from 3.9 to 4.3 ratio..used complete centres..wasnt sure what specific model nissan patrol they were from.. but guessed GQ 3l petrol..i swapped complete cenres and everything worked out fine...

just tried to do the same centre swap on my mated patrol and ended up with tailshaft flanges not even close to fitting on diff end..the flange is bigger on the tail shaft then on the diff and cant be bolted up...

anybody had this drama before? whats the quick fix? i was gunna try and swap the flange of the centres, but am worried about undoing that big nut on pinnion and then the flanges arnt interchangeble..or even if they are will i throw out pinion set ups..ie overlap and backlash...

anybody shed me some light on why on mine the swap worked and on my mates it didnt? and also if i should undo that big pinion nut while the centre is still in.. any advice is appreciated..cheers guys

You havent accidently picked a Pathfinder or Navara center? So the pinion flange is smaller than that of the driveshaft right? Is the front the same?

Just swap flanges. Do up real tight.

rd30 uses smaller flanges, same pinion shafts.

thanks bazzle.. i was hoping they were swappable.. any tricks to make sure pinion is tight enough or back lash etc is right? do i just do up until i feel very small amount of back lash? and this will definately not effect the lap of the dear teeth from pinnion to crown?

i just thought it strange that whan i done mine the tailshaft fit and on this one they didnt.. i definately got 4.3 gears..and what i bought for yesterdays swp was outta the 3.0l patrol. i removed the centres personaly. both centres fit and axles bolted in everything else seemed ok..

will be swapping fronts on both vehicles next week so im gunna pay close attention to flange sizes before i fit centres.. cheers guys

About 200 to 260 NM will do it.... I just do them bloody tight. They use a solid spacer not like Toyotas with a crush tube.
It shouldnt affect backlash BUT check before and after.

Edit: Undoing the nut is the hardest part, a rattle gun with only a good fitting socket may work, Dont use an extn as ant play will reduce torque..

are the centres the same strength or 'duty' from the 3.0l to the 4.2? im guessing they are the same but i thought id check with u.. seeing as though they have smaller flange. or is it the shaft thats smaller or lighter duty??

Every thing is the same. Flange is only smaller as PCD of shaft ends is smaller.

hey bazzle..shoulda read the bit about not using an extension.. i have one snapped 1/2 inch breaker bar now..lol organising to get to a diff place to undo the nut..i dont have a ratte gun. guy is hesitant to do with out removing centre again.. he worried about not being able to set tensions..do all the patrol diffs have the solid spacer or do some have crush tube? he seems to think that they might have crush tube... what do u think???

Do it on the vehicle easier. Just remove and refit, no tube.

bazzle ur a legend mate.. all fitted and finished.. couldnt source limslip 140 diff oil so just used a standard oil till monday.. wont be driving vehical til then.. will the limslip 85/140 do the job o5r should i get the straight 140?

If its an LSD you must use 85/140 lsd.
Normal wont do it any harm. Itll just grab its clutches and chatter on turns..

Bruce ,,, Better to swap complete and dont disturb crown wheel and pinion. LSDs dont normally give any trouble.
