if the linkages wear out . you might not be engaging it far enough.
on the leaver that goes hi - low slector . there is a rubber bush .
and also there is a small joint similar to a tyre rod end .
cheque these out and see how you go .
when the slector is in hi or low it should hold it self in .
due to the shaft has a grove where a ball bearing being pushed by a spring . hold it in the slected mode .
and also on cruisers pre 8/80 . there is a grease nipple on the slector .
only one grease nipple . you can find this on the slector .
this greases the large bolt that bolts to the side of the g-box .
if it does not have a grease nipple . you will have to remove the assembly
and apply some lube.

some times if a engine - g-box mount is broken . you can have problems to. .
i have seen transfer that have jumped out of gear . break the side of the gear that is being driven from the slector sleve .

i hope i have helped you out .
if you need any more advise . let me know.

Could be your dog teeth on the gears and/or shift hubs and/or excess end float gears/shafts

i reckon my leg gets a bit of a small bruise after each trip from the gear knob.

I havent knocked it out though yet.
