Grey imp. SWB Safari

Spotted a 89 SWB Safari (patrol) with 95k Kms.(apparently)

at parramatta rd Haberfield today. Dealer wanted 15k for it.
Stopped for a closer look out of curiosity. It was a diesel with the usual grey import frills (diff locks etc.). A bit to much corrosion uderneath for my liking. And I couldnt figure out why both lower trailing arms were bent! I didnt look like its been driven hard offroad or at all.
It did have a PTO winch as well which is the first Ive seen on a patrol anyway. The winch bar looked way to bulky.

Which brings me to my question. Are PTOs better / worse than an electric one???

is this the black one, with safari or something written on the rear upper quarted, it looks okay form a distance, but never had a good loog, check the lower arms for scratches, and all the underneath, see what you can come up with,

If the lower arms are bent. Theres a good chance it has been picked up with a forklift (thats if the under body is clean of scratches/dents). Also may have a dented driveshaft if it has been picked up with a fork.
I know this happens as a mate buy wrecks from the auctions and this is how they do it. And most have bent tailshafts.

didnt think about the forklify option, but they do do this, as a wreaker told me also

Yeh thats the one. It has a "OFF ROAD CENTER" sticker on the side of it. Its basically the same colour as my shorty. No Im not after buying it, I just stopped to take a look.
And yes you guys maybe right with the forklift thing. I recall it was marked on exactly the same spot on both sides.
Still curious if those PTO winches are any good.

PTO part of it should be good as that is what I have on my shorty. But with a Powerauto winch drum.
Does anyone know of how the lever thing on these work (and if they have one that no ones wants, I reckon I could find a home for it). As mine has a cable that does thru the firwall right around the engine bay and then down to the PTO.

the genuine nissan pto's have a whole section in the nissan manual, i'll have a look when i am at home again

most safari's in the wrecker come with PTO.. seems common in foofoo land

The Nissan PTO's are strong and robust units. The truck that I co-drive in has one and its survived several years of our abuse with only a few problems.....which were our fault.
I've only broken the shear pin on it once, when trying to winch it up a 5-6 foot almost vertical wall......I should have put a block in it, but was running out of time.
Other time was when we used the wrong gear oil in it at a mates suggestion

. The PTO unit got too hot to touch and was spitting oil out the top of the breather, but still winched a GQ and a Rangie out of a pit once their 8274's had died. Plus we had to winch our way out of that stage afterwards. End result was a buggered worm wheel and a scuffed up worm gear. A mate is cutting a new worm wheel (brass or bronze I think?), and the gear is ok to just tidy up and re-install.
The quality of finishing of the gears is better than Toyota PTO ones, but have no idea about quality of the materials??
As for the "electric v's PTO v's hydraulic" question.....well thats up to individual preferences. I say hydraulic running off Nissan PTO, with electric back-up.

all 4x4 spares in dande, just down from greens road on frankston/dandenong road. they always have a dozen

What oil do you run, as mine is in need of a change. Also do you have a slight weep out of the pto unit on the gearbox

Apparently synthetic 80w140 is the stuff to use. Currently running it in a mates comp Landcruiser PTO and its handling the heat really well!!! It was previously running same oil as the Nissan, and it got so hot it melted the plastic breather hose off!
You mean the cover plate on the gearbox?? Haven't had that leak yet, so can't help you there sorry.....imagine its only gasket goo on it though??
