2nd Gen 4Runners

Just a couple of q's on 2nd gen 4runners, I've been in nissan land too long and forgotten all toy stuff.
I'm basically wanting a comfy truck with all the fancy stuff, must have electrics, air con, steer etc etc. Thinking basically standard with 3" body lift and 33"'s on alloys. I don't want to go hardcore, been there done that, just want a road / mild touring car (with bling!).
The only ones i've seen with electrics are the SR5 limited v6's and the surfs. Is this correct?
How bad are the V6's? Heard all sorts of things and wanted some real opinions.
Would a standard toyota V6 auto handle 33's? Or is a manual a must?
Or am I better off getting a Surf and whacking in a Commo V6, or maybe a 4cyl and putting surf interior and a commo v6?
Opinions please.......

Best friend has a v6 4 runner (manual) it pushes 32 muds easily. keep away from the commodore engines - cannot handle water and overheat at low revs. - for a touring car as close to standard is best for reliability.

Sounds like you want the same as my truck.
It spins 33's easily but its the manual and doesn't have full electrics, but I would stand away from the auto V6, they drain a lot of power from the V6's.
I'm running 33's with my manual its fine, and it beats my mates SR5 Auto with 31's easily. The only problem is I think all the SR5's have auto's.
Maybe buy a surf and dump a 1UZFE Lexus V8 in!! it'll be heaps better than a commo V6 and probably cheaper too!

Thanks for your reply, yes yours is pretty much what I'm after, but with the bling electrics. I was actually even looking at the same rims!
I thought that may be the case re the auto. And a lot of the SR5's i've seen are manual so thats not a problem.
Have you had any problems reliability wise with the V6?
Yeah a Toyo V8 would be a long term option, I had a VH45 in my GQ and that was awesome in a big heavy truck, even better in a lighter 4runner!

Yeah they aren't too bad for rebailty, head gaskets go now and then, but toyota fixed both mine under recall a couple of years ago.
The V6 in my first 4runner was up to 280,000 and still going really strong. My current V6 is rooted due to a shit tune of the engine management I had on it. The V6's use a shitload of fuel but!! It should be better on fuel once I get the V8 in.

Thats not what I wanted to hear... I don't want something too thirsty.... although i'm sure it can't be anywhere near as bad as a GQ petrol!!!
65 litre tank aren't they?? How many kms would you get on average out of that?
Thanks,
Kyle

I have a 91 sr5 ltd v6 man, has all the bling that you're after. Only sr5's came with the electric's not to mention numerous other things that just make it a good tourer. As twisty_toy said they are basically mechanically sound engines, plenty of torque to push big wheels around, only hassle is the head gaskets, but I guess thats a problem with most cars. Keep cooling system in check and shouldnt be a prob.
Fuel economy is pretty bad (i get 18-20L/100km around town, drops to around 14L/100km on the highway) but you get that.
Would shy away from the early model auto's, my mates got the auto version of my car and has already had major problems with water crossings (auto computer flooded), not to mention the gearing just didnt feel right with them. They are a sweet car but.
Because of the IFS the 33's put strain on the front cv's/diff (both arent too strong) but that's a price you pay, if you were going to put the 33's on make sure you disable the POS ADD system and fit freewheeling hubs.
Hope this helps

sorry wrote that one in a rush, shoulda been two different points, 1 about the 33's with ifs and the other about the general importance of disabling ADD, tried to link them together for sum reason.
Cheers

i have a 95 4 runner, currently only has 31's but goes well, is thirsty around town and has a anoying whistle.
what lifts do i need to fit 33's or 35's? how do they go with 35's? do your 33's hit the guards much? what mods do i need for 2 or 3 inch bodylift? thanks

With the right rims (offset and width) 2" susp and 2" bodylift will be fine to clear 33's with only very minor scrubbing.
Mine still scrub with 2" susp and 3" body but that is with a 15x10 wheel with the biggest offset I could get.
35's will need atleast 6" lift and will probably still scrub, and slow the truck down heaps. I borrowed a mates set of 35's for a couple of months once and while it looked good , they just took too much power away. Changing the diff ratios would be a must.

Mine is 92 4runner.
Usually get around 360-400kms per tank around town. Alot better on highway.
Alot of people say these cars are thirsty. Compared to any other v6/v8 4x4 of the same era it is not too bad though in my opinion, and adding an extra tank should double you range.
31's fitted, v6 hasnt missed a beat!
