looking at a play truck has got the following parts and just after others opinions on the price and whether or not it would be a good play truck as i have very limited experience with 4x4, possibly thinking of registering it as well.
Any feedback is muchly appreciated.
82 model single cab hilux ute.
Tjm shocks? and extended shackles
body lift
37 inch boggers on beadlocked rims 80% tread
rock hoppin style bar
rock hoppin style tray and roll bar
detroit locker rear diff
power steering
neat interior with newer model bucket seats
308 holden donk with 4 barrel(Mark's adapter kit)
dual exhausts
PVC snorkel
tints
tray mounted radiator with thermo's
turbo 350 auto
It looks like a pretty tough truck but the gearbox is shagged and requires replacement(ie it won't drive at all, means no test drive) so not sure what I should be paying for it. It was registered up until recently but i am thinking that it wouldn't pass without some dramas mainly cos the 308 is on petrol and the huge tyres/beadlocks but I really know nothing,so not sure.
Thanks in advance
Chuck.

Spring over is an easy conversion on a hilux
They come factory SOA
What state are you in
Might be engineerable in NSW but not here in sunny QLD

Hilux is SPOA from factory and you may need to get an engineers cert for the 308 conversion (is it a post 82 308 ?)
The extended shackles would have to be ditched for RWC as few will pass them..
How many $$ are you looking at for this truck .. you may need a few more $$ to get a roadworthy on it ..

5K probarbly not to bad .. the rubber and rim's would be worth a few $$ (1500+ pretty easy) if the 308 conversion has been done well it may not be a bad idea as holden gearbox's are pretty cheap to get it going ... but may cost you a few $$ to build a good one that is up to the task of 4x4ing ..

wouldn't matter if it was petrol, straight gas or diesel.

It would if the engine is older than the hilux.

I am in the ACT and have been told that changing a vehicle in any way that alters the emmisions will require the use of LPG as a way of getting around the emmisions requirements.
I am inexperienced with these things so I could be wrong but with my heavily modified ford LTD I was told that if it wasn't on gas it wouldn't pass for rego, It was already on gas so it was exempt from emissions testing???
But that not a big prob more concerned with the price of the truck.
ie good value or border line, what would you pay for it???

.
Just one thing to consider!!!
There is a reason the gearbox is shagged!
It could be from wheeling to hard, which will more than likly meen that all the axles, CV's and Diffs will be very sore and sorry.
OR
It could be from overheating! A tranny cooler should help when you put in a new Box!
Or there is something else wrong with the rig and he doesn't want you wheeling it to find out what else is Farked! This is a Trick that some people use, the engine could be farked and when underload you may hear things that you won't at idle etc etc. Not saying that this is the case!!!
Its very hard to put a Price on it without seeing it! Do you have a digital camera??? If so take some pics and see if you can get them up on here!!!
From what you have said it would be worth between 4-5k (maybe)

it looks like the kinda truck that got wheeled too hard, the paint and body aren't messed up but I think the rest of the truck may have been.
I will post some pics when I learn how, if the pics are working atm.

Just reading this thread i would think twice about buying someone elses problems, are you able to fix things yourself ?
Last thing you need is for it to sit in the back yard for the next 2 years because you cant fix it or because it will cost too much.
5k + maybe 3k to get it up & going, you will be suprised how fast it all ads up.
Also as said if the engine is older than the Hilux you cant get it rego'd.

yes you can
RUFF was saying it had to meet emissions specs of the year of the car model though, ie a red 308 would only meet emissions standards in an early 90's car if it is on lpg

This is true but who wants to spend the money upgrading the emissions, to me the cost would not be worth it.
Beter off with a later model engine.
