killed the diesel???

Post by 85lux »

anybody got any ideas of what could be wrong...
i have a 3b diesel in my hilux
went out to narbethong on monday night.
on the way out there it started to blow a bit of smoke at idle. then the revs at closed throttle increased as the night went on from the usual 600ish to around 1500rpm. now we had a missfife with a closed throttle. under load it did not blow smoke or missfire. this all happened gradually as the night went on. now it idles at 1500rpm and blows a rediculous ammount of smoke(only with no throttle). then on the way home it started to want to accelerate without any throttle. still seems fine under load(apart from accelerating without me telling it to.), runs cleanly with no smoke that i could see at night.
i was thinking that it could be a cracked ring or hole in a piston. possible also an injector problem.

any help would be appreciated.

if it is indeed an early 3B then it will be exactly that, the governor diaphragm has developed a leak. they are cheap but awkward to change.

that is a big relief, i hope that is it. that makes sense cos the previous owner said the engine had been sitting dry for a few years as a spare motor for his coaster bus. i really appreciate the help.
i will try get hold of a digi camera in the near future and get some pics up. i will start a new thread when i get them. it drove quite well till the engine shiit itself.

they do. mine had awesome power just before it did that. until going down a hill there was a huge cloud of black smoke and it drove like it was at full throttle.

apparently frequently changing between low sulfur fuel and high sulfur fuel will fawk em too.

ENGINE FIXED

i checked the diaphram, it had a 2cm long tear in one side. i had a spare injector pump in a box. grabbed the diaphram from it, put it in, hey presto, she runs great.

now you mention it, i did notice that it cruised along with minimal throttle very well. i guess thats cos its getting heaps of fuel. would turning up the injector pump have this effect.
