Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz noise in a Rodeo engine bay

Hi all,
This is for a 1997 Rodeo with the 2.6L petrol 4ZE1
I have a noise from my engine bay that has been there since my wife drove too fast through a flooded street. Don't know if it is related but it could be water in something.
It sounds like a bearing about to fail a sort of bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz noise.
First things I thought of were power steering pump, aircon pump and alternator.
Well I've pulled the belts off the PS pump and the AC pump and the noise is still there. Couldn't get the belt off the alternator but I'm sure the noise is coming from the other side of the engine bay.
It seems to be coming from down low in the bay (definately much louder under car than above) on the drivers side.
In fact it sounds like it's coming straight out of the oil filter.
Anyone had a similar noise from this spot??
Can anyone think of what else it could be??
Thanks all.

No it isn't a "tap tap tap" but a constant bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Plus it's coming from the oil filter area.
Keep the ideas coming though

That's on the other side too. However after listening to it again today I'm thinking it might be an electrical contact. Bit loud though however it might be a relay? Not exactly sure but I'm going to have another look today.

Does the sound of the buzz change with revs?

My money would still be on a bearing somewhere. This has happened to my Jack quite a few times. Just a matter of hunting it down I guess...

Check the timing belt and adjuster

Ok all,
The noise has gone. For how long or what it was I don't know.
However I just removed the top cover section of the timing belt cover. The belt looks fine (50 000kms old) however it is far too hot atm to consider pulling off all the crap to get the bottom cover off. I'll do that later. I did spray WD-40 around in there just in case it will do something beneficial
Guess I will just have to wait and see.
What exactly would happen if water or dust etc got into the timing belt area? Do any harm? I'm guessing it isn't going to do much good.
Any thoughts?

Well I have it booked in for its 150k service with my mechanic on Tuesday. He reckons it's an idler pulley bearing???
So long as he fixes it with the service and it doesn't cost mega $$$ then I'm happy.

Interesting you mention this problem.
Recently i sprayed the engine of our GTI with plenty of degreaser and then hit it with the hose under pressure.
Afterwards I had this weird noise..........very similar to what your describing.
After spending some time tracking it down.............to do this I used wd40 and just hit anything that was moving while the engine was running.........and finally came to the lower crank bearing...........In our case it wasnt the actual bearing but a bit of rock that had gotten stuck down there and my hosing must have pushed it onto the actual pulley area.

Well this only started after my wife drove it through two flooded streets. there was a lot of small gravel type stuff caught up in other places so that is possible too.

Nah the diesel ones go 'clatter clatter clatter' and the 4cyl petrol ones go 'tap tap tap' while the v6s have a nice throaty roar as they suck their fuel tanks dry.
You must have mistaken these for those Sierra buzz boxes

No, the V6's go 'tap tap tap' aswell...
Dead right about the fuel tank though!

The ute got serviced today and guess what.............they couldn't find the noise. So I went into their workshop and it wouldn't do it. They said they had driven around the block twice but no noise ever. It hasn't done it for me this afternoon either.
Considering it has done it every time I drove it previously I find it is a bit odd.
With any luck it's gone for good. Bet you it isn't though.

Yeh, hate it when that sort of thing happens.
Those bloody gremlins have a strange sense of humour sometimes...
