to lux it, or not to lux it???

well im a bit confused

as a few of you may know im building an F20 with full hilux drivetrain, incl motor, box, diffs, SPOA, tube rr end etc etc etc

predicament: i just brought some 40 series diffs, with 6.1:1 gears, and also some 37" MTR's, with the plans of putting them on the F20 instead of using the lux diffs, in order to avoid axle, CV problems, and even better stability

but here's the problem, a few of the boys are here now havin a few beers and a barbie and just generally talkin crap, and they're trying to talk me out of using them on the datto, and put them on the hilux instead

which is cool, but the lux, is the donor vechile for the datto, so if i do that i gotta scrap the datto project completely

WHAT DO I DO??????

IM CONFUSED!!!!!

suggestions please!!!

Go the Hilux. Far more practical. Fit more camping gear in it too which is the most important thing :)

You havent bought the 40series diffs thinking they are wider and the CVs are stronger than the Hilux ones have you?

i mainly brought them for the ratios to be honest, i was just kinda hoping they'd be stronger as i seem to break a cv every 3rd or 4th trip out, and was kinda gettin jacked off with the whole process

but they already have a X-over high steer thingy jobbby done as well, which helped my decision too

how are they on par with the lux axles and cv's????

They are identical. They run the same CVs and the axles are the same exept for lengths.

Have you looked into where you will get Replacement 6.1 ratio Cruiser Centres?

Also is the Crossover High steer to suit spring over or spring under?

And what are you going to do about the fuel tank? As the rear cruiser centre is Offset.

interesting, DOH!!!

ah well, crawl speed will be good tho

diffs already converted to SPOA, so its ok with the X-over

i was plannig to convert it from dual cab to single cab, as my body is full of rust, and i was planning on geting a bigger tank anyway, mines only a 40ltr, so i need to move it as it is, i'll just move it out of the way

as far as the replacement gears, no i have no idea, i didnt look into it, any suggestions, and also, am i likely to realistically need them????

Dont know where you will find these. Not aware if they are available new aftermarket but the only vehicles that came factory with them were mid 70's Toyota Stouts.

If you drive anything like i do you will be looking for replacements very shortly. Actually if you are breaking Hilux CVs as regularly as you say then the 6.1s prob wont last long at all.

ok this may seem to be a silly question

but how are the ring and pinion etc gunna get damaged, the 4.8's i've got currently are still going strong, and thats even with busting multiple cv's

Because with a 6.1 ratio diff you have a very small pinion compared to the hilux 4.88 pinion.

if shag the crown wheel on 4.56 before i did a cv.
i think when you go to 5.29 the walls on the crown wheel are thinner.
also you have more teeth on the same size crown and pinion wheel, hence causing the teeth to be more likely to fail ;)

ah ok, so basically, im just gunna have to use them for the reason they were designed........... going slow

and if the 40's and the lux's are essentially the same, if i were to break a cv on the 40 diffs, can i just pinch it from a lux????

going back to the Datto thing ,the wheel base is to short for 37"

definately have to agree with you there, once i decide what to do, we were planning on extending it quite significantly

the front was going to go forward approximately 3inches

and the back was going to be moved approx 10-12 inches

plus we were hoping to keep it as low as physically possible, so long as we could fit the rubber up inside

Im having trouble grasping exactly what you are building? Is it a Datto or a Daihatsu? And you say it a already has all hilux running gear but you also have a hilux?

Im Confused sorry :?

sorry its a daihatsu F20, i just keep calling it a datto for some reason

it hasnt got the running gear in it yet as i've really only just started it, i've started the bodychop and stuff

the drivetrain is next, and i was just gettin everyones opinions first, before i go too far and realise i wanted to do it differently

the hilux i have, has always been my daily driver, but i recently de-registered it thanks to qld machinery, and am now planning on using it as my donor vechile for the F20, a project i have been wanting to do since i brought it about 3-4 yrs ago

sorry ruff

If it's a project you've been wanting to do for 3-4 years don't let ur mates with beer in hand change ur mind...unless their idea motivates/interests you more.

(that's just my 2 cents though)

yeah mate that was me, why's that???

yeah i think i've decided to ignore them and put them on the daihatsu anyway, hence why im selling one of my hilux's cause i no longer need the few parts i wanted off it
