Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey guys,

Been wrestling with a uni joint for the better part of today. I'm trying to press/tap/hammer the x shaped bit in the middle out but she won't come.

Before you ask, I have taken the circlips out

How do you guys do it? And why do people say this is an easy job?

Kinda pissed, wanted to go for a drive tomorrow.

I use a socket that is just inside the diameter of the uni hole, and a extension, and a bloody big hammer. Lay it on a piece of hardwood, preferably with a hole the size of the uni cup drilled into it. Some lube such as WD40 may be useful.

start with the hardwood and the socket/drift to remove the shaft yoke end of the trunnion (spider, cross shaped bit), you should be able to knock it through far enough to get both the cups out. once the flange yoke, with the trunnion still in it, is freed from the shaft, use an angle grinder to cut down through the trunnion on both sides so basically you are left with just the 2 cups in the flange yoke, then with the flange held firmly in a vice, tap out the 2 cups. they should go fairly easily as you're only doing one at a time and misalignment due to flex in the yoke will not cause binding.

reassemble in the reverse order - into the flange yoke first, using a vice or press to put it together. be very careful not to drop any of the needle rollers into the cups - a little extra grease will help. then press in the shaft end, and give it all a few taps with a hammer once you have the c clips in to get it all seated nicely. they can be a bit of a bitch but should take much less than an hour each even if it doesn't all go according to plan.

And a couple of extra things I would do. Before reassembly, make sure the circlip groove is nice and clean, and give the inside of the yoke assembly where the needle roller cups go a bit of a smear with grease to make insertion.
I reassemble by just fitting both cups into the yoke, then holding it in place in a vice. Then fit the trunnion, then squeeze away with the vice. Then finally use the same socket to get the cups in past the edge of the yoke.
And yes, be wary of dislodging any of the needle rollers.

if you've never done one before and aren't sure about how the come apart, or don't have all the tools to hand, I reckon an hour an end is a fair time. I think I do them in about 10 - 15 minutes but have never timed it. I'd say 5 - 7 minutes is about as fast as is humanly possible for one person if you lay out your tools etc beforehand. 2 minutes, I call BS.

But, I think they've got the better of me! I managed to get one of the cups out after lot's of swearing and pissing the neighbours off. Only 7 to go!

Seems like they just don't want to budge. I destroyed a socket getting just the one cup out. At least it was an imperial socket

So I think I'll take the whole assembly to a shop tomorrow and get them to do it. D'oh!
