73series question?

Hi all...
Been doing a bit of research on the 73series landcruisers (the mwb FRP topped ones).
What is the rear shocker set up like? Im just hoping its not like the bundera which has the hilux type set up, ie: one shock infront, one behind the rear axle. I cant seem to find anything on this?
Can anyone confirm/deny this for me?
Much appreciated...

Damn, well... if i were to buy a 73, is that set up worth keeping, or is it worth looking at converting somehow to standard type set up, ie. like the earlier cruisers, (60's, 40's, ect...)

I think they are like the 60 series. even if they have a leading and trailing shock like a hilux, they will be the same shock both sides, unlike the bundera which has a shorter, firmoer shock on the left side. post 1990 bunderas(prados) have 2 equal length shocks both behind the axle. the leading/trailing setup works fine unless you are chasing extreme articulation, which you're not going to get out of the 73 without major modifications (SOA or linking it) anyway. Don't let it hold you back from buying what is from all angles an excellent truck.

Cheers...
It was only cuz id read about the bad things about the early bunderas that i thought that it would be the same deal with the 73's...
Still thinking the 73 is a good option to a mq patrol.
As far as mods go, would be keen to bodylift, and maybe add a few inches in the springs (reset/replaces)
Anything i should know about feasibility of future upgrades/mods of this paticular model...
Thanks for that
Lee.

Most accessories for a 70 or 75 series will fit the middy. I did the body lift myself and still have a spare set of blocks. (bought 1m lengths of UHMW PE in 2 diameters so have half of it left) The lift was easy enuf and there is a thread on it here somewhere.
Working my but off at the moment for Melb Cup but as soon as that is over, I can answer all your questions about 2in susp lift and 35in tyres.
Unless you want to spend $$$ on engine mods, get a turbo diesel. The 3F is shite!!!
Otherwise a very comfy 4B. Suspension seats, factory air con, pushbutton 4wd activation, long enuf wheel base that it sits relatively well on the road, short enuf wheelbase that it is manouverable enuf off road
(can you tell i love it???)

entirely different vehicle. about the only thing in common is the dashboard. transfer case is similar.

MQ's are cheap and plentiful, you will pay top dollar for the 73 - so if you're a skinflint the patrol is the go (as always), but if you prefer a higher quality vehicle - well there is a good reason the landcruiser is more expensive.

bodylift isn't a great thing to do do any vehicle, it is far better to lift the suspension a little and cut the guards to fit bigger tyres. that said, it is a very easy vehicle to body lift.

try really hard to get a turbo diesel to start with. the 3B (non turbo) is weak and the 2F and 3F petrol engines have many problems are are very thirsty. upgrades you can consider include spring over axle suspension, coil/multiling suspension conversion, diff locks, barwork and winch, a wide variety of engine swaps, transfer crawler gears, differential gears, the list is virtually endledss depending on your budget and intended purpose. if you are going to tour it, all you need is a decent suspension package and 23 - 33" tyres to keep the highway rpm down a bit. if you want to build a competition monster, the sky's the limit. Consider also the jap import 74 series which is similar but with a high pinion front differential and some refinements.
cheers
