No doors for summer on MQ????

Post by Patroldude »

Anyone know the legalities of not using doors on MK/MQ Patrols??? I se the 40's gettin away with it and wondered if the patrols could go the same - not worried about safety - 5 point holdin me in and 2.5 inch rollbar already...

Just thinking it would be cool! BUT I know the boys in blue have a job to do...

cheers

Doors

Post by Patroldude »

Your entitled to your viewpoint - I admit it would look unusual but I wouldn't go far as to say ghay ..... actually now I look back at pics of doorless patrols without hard top on I am not sure I like it so much - may just get me a pair of rock doors made up hey??? That wouldn't look so bad... Trying to keep weight down for this project, alloy interior - no carpet, no consoles, no tail gate, no hardtop.... mind you all that weight will be off set by dual front shocks and reinforced mounts and strengthened diff housings..... Well thats one way of doin it I suppose?

It would definately attract the attention of the FEDS. It can attract a defect as you wont have any side impact protection which will affect ADR 29.

That would probably be ok but I think QLD transport would want an engineers cert for that as you are altering an ADR.

I have been legally allowed to drive my Suzuki without doors, as long as I still have all the side mirrors still attached and no part of a passenger protrudes from the vehicle and seatbelts are worn

5 Points don't restrain legs or feet in a roll, especially when instinct tells you to put it out to stop you falling over.

Doors

Post by Patroldude »

True - 5 point does not hold feet or legs in but foot usually burried somewhere in the engine bay anyway or i will just tie shoelaces to pedals so I feel nice and safe...

Its only a thought and will probably just be put in place when I am out shooting on a property or something so legalities won't matter so much on private property....

Thanks for all the input people.

Cheers

Grimbo, I am just stating what the federal regs are. If VIC roads lets you do it then thats their problem, it still doesnt exempt you from ADR 29 unless you Zook is an early model to which the rules don't apply. It can still attract a defect.

I am pretty sure if you talk to the techo guys at VIC roads they would probably want an engineers cert for it. The other catch is even if the engineer has signed it it still might not be right as he may have made a mistake or intrepereted the regs incorrectly.

Having a rego check done at a service station does not neccesarily mean its roadworthy if the inspector doesnt know what he is looking at. Thats why here in the ACT you have to go to a goverment inspection station when you have a modified vehicle as they check ADR applicability.

There is always someone who bacause they got around the system to get something passed thinks it ok & legal. Quite often the inspector has got it wrong.

Thats my 20c worth.

Did you get it in writing?

The other thing I forgot was ADR2 Its applicable to but it has an out for you
Caluse 2.2 says if the doors are designed to be easily removed and attatched then the requirement does not apply, therfore you Zook (if its a Sierra) would come under this rule but for the Patrol the doors are not designed this way.

I double checked this with the Engineer who writes this stuff & this is correct.

While this is all well and good - Vic Raods has nothing to do with me being in the shire which is south of Sydney.... hence (duh!) NSW.

Vic roads will pass nearly anything it seems... compared to NSW where we gotta get everything engineered.... expensive.

Yeah the ACT models its rules on the RTA & they expect the same thing, the good thing about NSW is if u are in a country area u dont always have to go to the RTA for an inspection.

How far south of Sytney are you?
