Ranchos upside down

I no its been talked about before ive just swapped from 9000 to 5000 for the front of my GQ wagon and i have clearance issues with my 5 link control arms at full artis i get that much movment that even after re drilling the shock location holes further apart the control arms still hit the lower shock body would get round this by turning them upside down did run the 9000s this way for a while didnt find much differenc in ride quality when turned the right way up would like other peoples comments

Seriously, for every person that says you can't run them upside down there is someone who says they have had no problems. Give it a shot and add your 2 cents worth.

Had a mate who was running toyota (80 series) shocks upside down on a land-rover hybrid with no problems. Until he snapped one of the shock eyes off, and rancho wouldn't warranty them because they were not on a toyota. He then dismantled the shocks, re-welded and beefed up the eyes, and when he re-assembled them they would only work properly the right way up.

The ranchos I have on my IFS are upside down (thats the only way they fit) and have been on for a few years now with no probs.
I have heard of ranchos developing an air bubble if run upside down causing them to lose their dampening abilities but I have also heard to fix em all you do is turn em up the right way and cycle them a few times and chuck em back in.

Hay Duncan are you using pin`to`eye converters as I have no problems with them and standard top shock mounts.
Although by the sounds of your set up with lowerd top mount`s and hitting bottom shock your got mager travel on your rig
What have you done to stop the spring from poping out on full droop???
As mine are about 5mm before falling out on full drop 6" coils

Speaking with the Sydney shocks group and looking at a Koni, the twin tube etc designs will develop an air bubble in the top if they are run upsidedown. Air is a lot thinner than oil and doesn't help damping all that much when passing through the valves.

I would have thought them filling up with mud & grit rubbing on the shafts could be a problem.

Ranchos dont have the stone guard. Only a rubber boot. Even with Koni/OME it doesent take long to cut it off.

Ran them today for awhile upside down and there was very little damping from them turned them back the right way up and they were 2oo% better so certainly wouldnt recommend to do this

i ran my ranchos upside down for a while

and found it made no difference

i've been running them upside down on my lux for as long as i've had it, makes no difference to ride.

Sorry, the older model ones I've seen all had stone guards.

so seeing as nobody has said what is the right way up??? adjuster nob to top or bottom?

I ran mine upside down for 2 years. No Problems at all.

Knob bottom, shaft up is the "right" way.
