Hi,
I am looking for 20m of 11mm wire rope to suit a hand winch. I called up the manufacturer and their price was around $200. Does this sound reasonable? Where else could I look for this sort of stuff?
Cheers,
David

that price is a bit high yeah.
in Sydney there are a few places that sell that kind of junk, A Noble and Son in Auburn are pretty good, under $2/meter for 8mm wire rope last time I bought. should be around $3 - $4 meter for 11mm I'd guess.
try looking in the yellow pages for rigging or winching or wire rope supplies.
you will need to make sure the rope you buy matches the manufacturers cable in terms of number of strands/bundles/twist direction or the clutches in your hand winch won't handle it properly and it will slip or crush the cable or worse. you will also probably need to braze whip one end of your new cable so you can pass it through the winch easily, most suppliers won't do it for you.

Thanks for the info. I think the price might have included a carrier for the rope which I'm sure I can do without. I'll get some more details on the rope before I buy anything.
Cheers,
David

Try Nobles or Keebles as they sell that sort of stuff. They are both located in the Dandenong area and are generally both very competively priced.

You could probably get it from the places listed above, but make sure it is compatible for the winch u are using i.e. pretty sure tirfor style winches have a special style cable so it won't slip and a tapered end to thread into the winch??

I noticed that they have their own hand winch product which looks identical to mine. Hopefully they'll be able to match the rope against that.

what's up with your old cable? broken? frayed? is there a 5 or 10 metre section of it that is still good? not often you need the full 20m, a shoter section saves space and weight.

It's a second hand winch so the cable is a mystery.

I was thinking 10m + an extension strap might be a good option in any case.
