Axle sizes:

this is a little info meant a as a basic giude to give some idea to the guys that don't know, there are variations of the brands this is only the average that came in the particular diff.
I'll start with my favorite and i reckon the best for anything i would biuld the availability of aftermarket bits for the ford nine inch is just about endless.
brand axle diameter in inch spline count
ford 9" 1.50 35
"" 1.32 31
"" 1.20 28
Gm 10bolt 1.32 30
GM 14 bolt 1.37 33
" " 1.50 30
dana 35 1.18 27
" 44 1.31 30
early 44 1.25 19
dana 70 1.50 35 -23
dana 80 1.52 35
Landrover 1.11 10
" " 1.24 24
some nissan 1.25 30
suzuki sierra 1.09 26
vit 1.09 26
toyota most 1.31 30
some interesting Gm derivitives
Gm 11,000lb -12" 1.75 27
as above rockwell c120 1.75 32

Ok ok don't flame me its only a basic giude to give people an idea and to show the stuff we get over here ain't that bad. I would like to find the spline count on the rear of the MQ MK patrol and the GQ also there axle diameter ive seen them and they look pretty big. To me it would be a bit silly to put a set of dana 44 into a lux or a forty if you get my piont.

except to get rid of your birfs....
297x u-joints are plenty strong for say up to 36-38" tyres

true oz ,was mainly a dollar buys best mod sort of comment,LIke i wouldn't trash a lux rear for a dana 44 running 1.30 or somthing axles ,you would want at least 1.50 or somthing to make the dollars, trouble worth it, mmm the birffs are a worry. i wonder if the front axle gets a slight bow in it under high torque situations which causes the berff to lock agianst itself before it shatters its intestinal vertues thruout the knukle.mmmm

a great source of info there doz00r and its very useful lookup of axle sizes etc.....the D44s will still break with lockers and 36-38 tyres, cause they are similar in strength to a toy......with CTM and alloy axles you are the bomb..........

I beg to differ on the 44 axles as you(BJ) and i have both seen 42s on 44 axles and so far it has only twisted rears but hasn't broken any fronts.
well maybe one front Ujoint but that could have been age.

do a search on pirate ruff, the yanks blow the 44s apart and many dont think the 44s are much stronger then the cruiser/hilux fronts

even lance in his tech write up on the CTM u-joints, mentions that D44s : "for some conjure up images of strength and are a vast improvement over the standard axles, but for others, they bring on images of broken u-joints, trail repairs and so on"

and when i was reading even sam himself was pretty surprised they held up, and im not quoting, but im sure he mentioned it that it had to do with, the high gearing, low horsepower, and no front locker, but maybe he knew they would hold up.....i dunno, and to be honest im only going on what i have read, and remember i asked you twice when you told me he has not broken any fronts as i was surprised, but to his credit, he has traction control, 42s, and a V8, and a heavy foot and like you said they have held up............... so people should make there own decisions, i think i just blindly have faith in my toyota.........cause im blinded, and i know when i talk about danas, its largely horse (BS) cause ive never driven on danas, or used them................ so im just spouting......again even now........sorta feel like a nissan driver really

Hmmm i found a waggy 6 lug D44 today and now Sam has gone and put sh!t in my head and offered me his ARB so i may be selling some Longfields even before i get to use them fully. I dont know what ratio it is or how much he wants for it but i bought the front springs from it and i may go back yet for the rears. Im only thinking of this for the extra width, 61inch wide

61" ?? and thats not a huge increase, im currently 60" exactly in the front.....you wont be that miuch thinner
can that fit without being narrowed, cause i know some need to be narrowed on the long side, to fit the pumpkin in...... but being only 61" maybe it will go in...

remember when i went to wider diffs, and everyone was saying to outboard? we didnt end up out boarding, cause outboarding is NOT COOL!!

that sounds pretty sweet ruff

you will be surprised to know i was considering axle options yesterday and found that i want to be in the 63.8" vicinity, i can get the whole axle and whole bit........nice and cheap, with rear discs......... (thats a rear with full floater) time for the 4 link, and more wheelbase.......... keep the leafs front, maybe run the IFS hubs...... and definitely needs some hydro, then im good to hammer down

and if you have any problems with your waggy, you can always buy CTMs and alloy axles......... sounds wayyy cool!

im just looking for that elusive $500 D60 front then we call it good....... i really dont want to put a D44 in mine, i think toyota was sadly g: when they put hilux axles under a cruiser although i might consider it if you have no problems at all......

what hubs are on the axle?
what splines?
is it a HP?
its from a waggy did you say? hmmmmm
airlockers for danas dont come up very often at all.....

talk about a bit of excitement though

And for the Bishi's:-

1.22" (31mm) and 28 spline (3.0 V6 + 2.5 tdi)
1.42" (36mm) and 31 spline (3.5 V6 + 2.8 tdi)

Just out of curiosity, which Nissans are those figures for?
How do the MQ/K, GQ and GU figures vary? Or don't they?

Exellent mits, the ones i showed where rears,I had a set of mq's in the shed not long ago and thought the axles where pretty healthy looking ,It goes to show ,You would have to spend big dollars on yank stuff to compete with those nissan rears. admittedly you can get axles for dana's , 9"s made of better material ,but dollar for mod say's the nissan stuff is pretty dam good .mmm Keep the info coming .1.51 37 spline mq Is from the cab chass to ? some one asked about splines before ,the reason more splines are better is ,the more splines the more surface area = stronger , thanks mits.

Just some info from many moons ago.

This is good info to have handy... pity it doesn't list root diameters as well. I can't believe the nissan dual cabs have 1.51" 37 spline!!! That is the same size as a 35 spline D60 axle - pity they are semi-floaters.

Anyone know the spline sizes of the GQ/GU Cv's - are they 1.26" 31 spline inner and outer???

I think MQ and GQ are 31 spline in the front, not shure about GU :)

MQ front is 29 spline (1.2") (inner & stub)
GQ and GU front are 31 spline (1.26"). the GQ inner is 27 spline where is goes into the CV (same as toyota) GU inner is 31 spline at both ends. stubs on both models are 31 spline (1.26")

MQ H233 rears are 31 spline (1.26") (also most pathfinder, navara, etc)
GQ & GU H233 rears are 33 spline (1.31") (some navara models)
all the H260 rears are 37 spline (1.51") apart from some oddball GU 34 spline ones.

If gq front inners have same outer spline as yota, why hasn't someone stuffed a longfield into a gq front yet? gotta be doable?

Cheers

the GQ outer stub is thicker (+1 extra spline)and longer, and the bell of the CV is also bigger diameter and longer. it could be done, with a bit of a custom work to the spindle and an adaptor to take the toyo hub, maybe??

you try first. :D

Isn't the GQ 31 spline but only 1.26", whereas the toyota is 30 spline but 1.31", so therefore the toyota stub is thicker?
