I have finished the 40 and planing the next car . I have purchased a 94 80 serries GXL which i am thinking of cutting into a try top ute which will get the weight down some bit . now the fun stuff

Gen 3 compared to the 4.5lt twin cam what would be weight difference?

then the standard 5 speed to the turbo 700 auto what would be the weight difference?

i am wondering if changing to the above would save a lot of weight over the front plus i could get the weight more to the centre of the car as the v8 is shorter. Plus this would allow me to do a few other thing i have in mind  any thoughts please share thanks Darren

gen3s are about 200 kgs without accessories

Ask Bru21 as he'll know the exact figures on the weight of the gen3 as he's done a conversion on his patrol

Dont go Gen3.. nice engine... try and get hold of a US 5.7lt Vortec.. far more reliable engine... however it is cast not alloy so it will be a bit heavier. Or maybe super-charged diesel? low down torque with no turbo lag....

i lined up a 5.7 vortec but he wanted $4500 for a crate (one of 3 left in the country as ther are crushing the excess stock now apparently)

reasons i did not get one are:

needs motec etc and they are not as good as the ls1 computer imo especially as i had mine mafless tuned to suit regular).

weight.

ls1 is common as now. i needed flywheel bolts for example $12 in stock at local holden enough said.

be different (at this time they are quite rare in gq's).

i got mine for $5500 all up cats to flywheel, inc loom engine covers airbox etc etc...

they have a 140a alt too.

i got a 6mth warrenty on mine vs none with the crate.

cheers mate bru

Ive got a LS1 running in my defender

I cant praise it enough

Its been in 3 off road races and is simply awesome. I scares to S%&t out of the other 4wds and most of the buggy classes. its done some 3500kms under full noise and they are light and easy to get horsepower out of

Oh yeah Alt is 140amp and parts are cheap ( compared to landrover v8)

I think the motor with everything is about 185kg

I just need to find a reliable gearbox now
