Which rear end to use

Ok, i have a decision to make
I currently have a 80 series front axle assembly under my project hilux question is, what to use in the back?
1st choice - 80 Series rear
Pros:
Strong
Toyota
Cons:
Offset diff centre
2nd choice - GQ rear
Pros:
Strong
Centred diff
Cons:
Nissan
3rd choice - Ford Dana 60 30 Spline
Pros
Strong
Centred diff
Cons:
Huge
Heavy
Aftermarket in aus
I need to buy in the next week, from the prices i can get they are all around the same $'s
Basicly i need a strong rear end, with a approximate 63" WMS to match my 80 series front and 4.1 diff gearing, preferably with a centred diff to match t-case
Which would you use and why?

Go the GQ rear if you want to keep the Hilux t-case. Much, much simpler- who cares what brand it is- and you know why I know.
Then again, if you are just building a buggy w/out the short rear drivetrain from duals, the toyo rear won't perform noticibly different.

Yeah i know, other than the hilux t-case the next move will most likely be D300 which is still a centred t-case

brand name means nothing.
Just go the GQ diffs as theyve proven themselves on other rigs such as hypolux's etc.

GQ. Who cares about the brand its the best option there for your application

Dana 60 would be cool...but $$$
The stud pattern would be different to your front as well if you dont convert it somehow.
Do they convert them to toy pattern in the US?
At least withe the D60 you can upgrade as much as your bank account can allow but are harder to find than the other options.
Is 4.1 a standard d60 ratio? Or would you need to swap gear sets / carriers?
(sounds like trouble)
Dave.

The D60 i am looking at is 4.1 gear but is a DRW so i will need to custom make hubs to convert back to SRW but i can make it a 6 on 5.5" pattern at the same time and locate the mounts with in reason where i need to make a 63" WMS

What does DRW & SRW mean?
I get everthing else but these terms!

Oh chit!
Look at Jack MacNamara in Melbourne has he makes 10 bolt? 35 spline rear axles and drive flanges for rover salsbury (preety much a D60). A few dollars involved.
They would be around the 63 wms.
Would custom axles be the only option from converting to DRW to SRW?
Good luck.
Dave.

you change the hubs, not the axles on the end of the housings, the pieces that spin on the bearings

what about ratios and lockers etc etc have you factored these things in, i think your better off with either the gq or the 80
the dana will cost heaps in the end esp if you wanna go an airlocker etcetc

The dana was last on my list, i would prefer to keep toy, but the nissan is looking like a goer

As I understand, if you get the strongest nissan rear, you have 37 spline 1.5" or so axles. Way bigger and stronger than a toy 30 spline 1.31" axle.

but the toyota is a full floater so it holds no load on the axles, only force is torque.
if a nissan snaps an axle and you got no spares, your screwed. with a toyota, you simply remove tailshaft and both axles, cover hubs up with bags, and drive to help in front wheel drive.
both options are pretty much bulletproof tho.
good luck with your decision.

Mate I gotta agree with the rest on the GQ diff. I gave mine absolute heaps for years and it still ran beautifully when I sold it. There's heaps of them around too.
As already said, its also a lot cheaper to get a locker for a GQ than trying to find/modify one for a Dana.

H260, comes in a few different models - MQ, GQ, GU - in 33 and 37 spline versions. 10.25" ring gear. it is a big unit.
just use the normal old 33 spline H233 disk rear end that is in 95% of the GQ's out there. you'll more than likely smoke the output shaft on your t-case before you break anything in that. use a GQ tail shaft as well, and modify the other end of that for your toyo t-case flange. that way you get the bigger pinion flange bolt pattern and u-joints as well.

When you think about upgrading the rear diff check out options for the rear t/fer flange I think you can use the front or rear t/fer flanges from a 60/75ser u just have to change the dust cover.I will check and get back to you. This will allow you to use the bigger uni's.

No it isn't - Macnamara in Melbourne make their own lockers (Better than ARB's) which cost about the same as an ARB for a nissan. ARB also makes a Dana 60/LR Salisbury locker in 16 24 30 and 35 spline.
