G'day,
Anyone tell me if the top of the 5 speed box, where the selector rails are, is open to the rest of the box?
Mine wouldnt shift into 2nd from 3rd,I pulled the floor out,and tipped some oil into the hole where the shifter goes.It fixed the problem*(mostly).
My question is -if you can tip oil into the top of the box that easily, surely water and dust etc. can also get in there. It would also be easier to fill the box from the top, instead of the filler plug.
Or am I grossly mistaken?

yes it is open to the rest of the box. it is a lot more work to do what you have done in most cruisers as you have to lift the floor mat/carpet, unbolt the floor panel, remove the shift boots, and the shifter - as opposed to just undoing one single filler plug. there is also no way to get the level correct by just tipping oil in the top. if you overfill it it will probably leak from the front seal.
the top of the box is fairly well sealed by the shifter and the shifter retaining bayonet fitting, and there is supposed to be a small rubber boot over the top of that, too.

Yeah, I had to lift the floor *(I took the mat out a long time ago) It has a rubber boot over the shifter hole, but I reckon If you removed the filler plug and topped up the g/box through the top,It would be easier than from underneath with a bastard hand pump.
Thanks for the reply .I dont know why the selectors would go dry, though. How come the oil doesnt get up there?

there should be plenty of oil slung around up there by the rotating gears, unless the box is very empty or very full. shifting difficulties are more likely to be due to worn synchro clutch assemblies, shagged bearings, and worn out selector forks that a lack of oil in the top of the box.
