rev problem

For some reason my 80 series petrol will not rev above 2100rpm

when the revs go over 2100rpm the engine dies until it drops back below about 1500 before it kicks back in.

It drives perfectly anall day long if i keep it below 2100rpm.

Have done the diagnostice test. This however does not give a fault signal

This has happened all of a suden after washing down the engine. thought something might be wet however it has been two weeks and still stuffed
Any sugestions
thanks
Steve

if it's twin cam there could be water down the
spark plug tubes.

Main tank fuel pumps work off a 2 stage voltage they step up to 12v probably around that 2100rpm if u get someone to put a fuel pressure gauge on it that would tell you if pump is rooted cheap fix is any commodore in tank pump with alittle mods will fit. You would think the water should have evaporated after two weeks but have a look and get some crc into the plug areas.

Quite common for the no3 and 4 plug to get wet, and this scenario results.
Would also try taking off the dizzy cap and seeing if it is wet...can give the same result....
Friend just had the pump pack up and low power resulted but no cutting out...this is reminiscent to water making the efi close down as in above.
Hope Toymota dont sting you too much...

Skootin, what pressure should the fuel be at and where is the works that create the step up voltage on the fuel pump.

does it have a catalytic convertor by any chance.. if that has collapsed then that could be the problem...

Is it missing? Or just not reving?

shuts down or cuts out, until below 2100 then fires perfectly.
when driving i can put my fot flat to floor and accelerate fast, when it goes over 2100 i near hit the front windscreen as it shuts down.

yes does have a cat but i would not have thgought that it would cuase this.

I dunno!!!! :? I'm just rattling off thoughts. :D Its fuel injected so it might.
Heres a thought............. It's not something like a speed cut out playing up?

i give up
dropped it into mechanic down road.
will let you know what the problem is, or hopefully was....

3 1/2 weeks of driving around under 2000rpm in a petrol is enough to send you crazy.

Cancel Toyota booking you need to find a good dyno shop that's the only way to really check. They can put a fuel pressure guage on and run it up on the dyno. I don't know to many in brissy have a look in the yellow pages and ring around.Fuel pressure should be up around 350psi do not play with if you don't have the right gear (lot's of fuel little spark BIG FIRE)
There may be a way of testing the flow after the pressure regulator but this may not be of much help to your problem.

mechanic down road just phone back
He tells me it is the throttle position sensor and it is stuffed.

$285 from toyota and over 500 non genuine.

I told him to go with that so it is ganna cost me $350 total
this sucks.

Anyone else had this kinda problem.

cranky
does this mean that it thinks it is over reving and cuting out on the rev limiter?
what do you think?

Look on the bright side.....If you lived in the Riverland it would have cost 3 times that!! Oh. Plus freight..
