Supercharged SD33

Hi Guys,

anyone ever considered supercharging a SD33? There was a cheapish supercharger on ebay recently to suit a 6cylinder diesel motor. It claimed to put out 5psia. My thoughts where that the SD33T only runs around 7-8psia (i think, correct me if i'm wrong) boost when the turbo fully spins up, so a constant 5psia boost might do wonders for a standard sd33.

Someone told me you would have major problems tunning it, is this correct? couldn't you just run the motor a little richer then standard? Are there an major mods? would you just fit the supercharger and pump it directly into your inlet? i guess the air filter goes before the charger. any manifold mods needed?

cheers

A man with similar thoughts... good to see.

I was looking down this road recently also mate - the supercharger you are probably refering to is a little unit off the toyota crown motor - yes it pumps about 5 psi and is totally electrically activated so you can turn it on and off as you wish.... I was looking to modify an SD33 air con bracket to fit one on..... The supercharger should fit above the alternator nicely. I can get em for about $250 - 300 bucks down here hey.

Normal naturally aspirated diesels have a butterfly in the intake manifold where the trubo models do not.... this may need to be replicated also with supercharged motors - the inj. pump is different story though... I don't like to mess with such delicate things that go boom if not tuned by those in the know and they are too expensive for me to play with. I know plenty of people who do it themselves but I would be too worried personally - theoretically all you gotta do is pump up the juice a bit. I recon it would be worth getting dyno tuned but make sure ya motor is in good condition.

Manifolds should be ok but - you will need to make up some hoses and stuff but I think it will be orthwhile.... you can crank out a it more boost by playing twith the pulley sizes too but I never got around to it.

Take some good advice - if you do this get a set of extractors for it too... makes a hack of alot of difference hey.... Maybe small toyota supra intercoola as well with bonnet scoop facing rearwards for heat to escape too maybe????

I would be most interested to see how this goes as I wanna do it to my mates truck next year - cheaper than turbo'n it..... maybe twin sequential or twin simultaneous superchargers????? NICE>>>>!!!

The engineer near work put one on his . I think he runs it about 4psi. Still uses the electric clutch, just turns it on when he needs it. He also runs it one old fish & chip oil.

If you want a charger that is a little biger, go to SSS automotive(sydney) they have them off the 4agze(toyoata motor) 1 to 1 pully will give you around 8 to 10 psi if interested. Im putting one on my petrol motor.

If you running inj and blower you gonna run into problems using 280zx set up mate - u can't re-map the ECU cheaply or easily hey - its too old really and not in demand (went down this path before!) you will have to rewire and run differnt aftermarket ECU and wiring loom to get it to work with blower.

Motor won't hold it either - 10psi is a fair amount and you will need to alter the compression ratio as well as get a rising rate regulator and retune it too.... will go good like my turbo petro... that was ablee to smoke 33's in second gear all day long.....

I may do the blower thing using a Toyota crown one psi only about 4 or 5 so it will be fine for stock motor so long as I richen the mix a bit - should be good!!!!

I have a wolf2 computer farit a home allready along with stage 2 cam 300zx injectors all ready to go. I could start the boost at 6psi and go from that. If it dont work, its just time to put a 350 chev in. I like to be diffrent first. Plus it would be interesting to see what horsepower i can get. All the parts have been donated from a zx specilist so its costing me only the time.

Screwy, when did you move.

Easy as then hey - don't forget the fuel but... oh and decompression.

280Zx official pwer is 103kw 202Nm and L28 patrol official figure is 88kw 201Nm.... Now I know you can make more from combining it and its probably going to chew the juice chronically! I just sold my 350 Chev but that was nuts... wheel stands in 2 wd !!! Got photos to prove it.... smoked easily too....

Be different go inj. makes me wanna blow my petrol too with the crown just for off road situations....

injection is fitted. Should start on the rest after xmas. If it dont work and you said a 350 can wheel stand it i might look at a vh45. wheel standing no good in a shorty with spo and 3 inch body lift.

I have a gq 4.2 diesel with a supercharger and the person before me did it they moved the power steering down and changed a few things but it works well in the bush.

Chev was worked....

Springs were soft and sagged..... wouldn't have done it if it was lifted... ran 31s too.... only small stand 1/2 foot. Oh and the clutch was clutch from hell....VERY heavy.

Wouldn't worry about it... go the chev - awesome conversion... lots of curry!!!! Might be tempted to buy ya injection off ya when time comes...

I paid $100 for last set up complete hey - bargain!

$100 is a major bargin. I may sell it if i go V8. Were hoping to get 250hp out of it. If i get it its coming out and going into the 280ZX and then ill push for more horses.

Patroldude out of intrest how easy was the turbo set up. Did you do it yourself and what was the rough costs. To do this set up im doing to sell it as a set up at my friends ZX shop we are going to be looking at roughly $4500 to $5500 fitted.(no internal work included)

Definatly keep going with the experimant of the L28, if u fail then yeh, Go V8. If u can do that sorta work u shouldnt have too much truoble dropping a V8 in depending on fuel inj or carbi/gas.....

mate i didnt move, the place u were at was the missus place.
since then we have split up unfortunatly and im back at home.

cheers

Touch'e mon cherie!.....

Yeah - chicks are more fickle than 24v diesels man - I am just lucky to find one who supports my truck usage.

I think I may not be out of the patrol woods yet - seems like three are a couple of things to do yet....

Turbo my petrol!!!!
