Dear outer limits members,
I currently own a 1987 Mazda B2000 RWD and am thinking of trading up to a 4x4 for work and recreational purposes. I want something that doesnt use an exessive ammount of fuel, has enough get up and go for daily driving, is reliable and i can throw camping gear/tools/ect in the back without worrying about damage to either vehicle or equiptment.
I was thinking SWB MQ patrol with a bit of lift and some decent tyres.
can anybody offer me some advice on what to go for, how much i should expect to spend, rego/insurance costs ect. any help would be usefull.
Cheers everyone.
Michael

The sky is blue because blue has a short wavelength therefore gets scattered around the sky more than any other colours. Sunsets are red because red has the longest wavelength and therefore is the only colour of the spectrum that can travel through all the atmospere.

Where are you located? Rego insurance etc varies state to state. In Vic reg about $500 or so. Insurance- www.aami.com.au or www.racv.com.au or justcar etc... and get an online quote

And....Buy a shorty GQ you should be able to find one for 6000, buy Wendles (off this board) if he hasn't sold it yet for 5500. Advantage of coil springs+heaps of bolt on mods available and they are only going to get cheaper. Also bulletproof drivetrain. Only issue is fuel econ. If you are worried about it, buy one on gas as i don't think you will find a diesel for that price.

Cheers
Rob

By the way, that information about the sky was interesting.. i allways thought it reflected off the ocean... The vehicle doent have t be a patrol, just trying to see whats avalible and what others recommendations are.

Transmitted light (from the sun, light bulbs, fire, etc) is made up of a spectrum of colors. The longest wavelengths of light are on the red end of the spectrum and the shortest wavelengths are on the blue/violet end of the spectrum.

When transmitted light such as sunlight enters our atmosphere it collides with the oxygen and nitrogen atoms. The color with the shorter wavelength is scattered more by this collision. Because violet and blue are the shortest wavelengths the sky appears to be violet / blue. But because our eyes are more sensitive to blue light than they are violet light, we perceive the sky as blue.

try having a look through the 10 other threads about this same thing for suggestions.

It's callled Rayleigh scattering, occurs between 2-8km up into the atmosphere!

Blue and (ultra)violet light have short wavelengths (as mentioned) and when they hit gas molecules, their energy is absorbed by the molecule and then given off again. There is no set direction for the energy given off, so it goes in every direction, turning the sky blue. The same happens to red light, but to a much lower (inverse 4th power) degree.

This does make the sky red at sunset, but smoke, pollution and dust particles in the atmoshphere play a much larger role in sunsets.
This is called Mie scattering, and takes place in the lower 4.5km of the atmosphere. The more smoke etc the more scattering, the less blue etc light gets through, the more red the sky appears - thats why you get great sunsets after a couple of days of bushfires, or if a big volcano has blown its stack!

(I have a exam on Remote Sensing in a weeks time - sorry for the detail, but it's always nice to know some times :!: )

Edit - get a zook - get a plenty bling one for your price range, cheap to run, mod etc. LWB models out there if you want lots of room...

I had an exam in Remote Sensing about 5 years ago and thats all I can remember! ;)

I think they are telling u to buy a soft top so that u can appeciate the scattering and light wavelengths. Just try not to let your volcano blow its stack over it or we'll be in for some full on Mie scattering! :D

As already mentioned the GQ has become a very good 4WD to buy in the under 10K price bracket. As said, heaps of aftermarket stuff for them and confortable. I've always been a Toyota fan but the GQ is hard to go past if u are on a budget.

Dont spose you like to play with fire and find animal disection interesting?

Then youd fit right into the psychopath triangle ;) . All three are thought to be precursors.
